| | Ron Haydock 99 Chicks CD Ron Haydock Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Ron Haydock & the Boppers were Chicago's answer to Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps. One look at the cover to this new Norton rlease will tell that and then some. Haydock's first 45, the title cut, may be the only 50s rockabilly record to have the "F" word in it, but Haydock evidently had plans to take it way further than that. After leaving Chicago and the Boppers behind, our hero moved out to Hollywood, started writing for assorted movie monster magazines (Famous Monsters of Filmland among them) and even made a film appearance or two (audio clips are here in full drive in movie fidelity) in such choice efforts as Rat Phfink A-Boo-Boo. The whole Haydock story is here to absorb (including his last days writing porno novels!) and the audio end of it (including mucho alternate takes of the title track and other fun stuff) is just fine, fine, fine. The man never became a star, but he knew how to rock. And in these icon obsessed times we live in, my friend, that's sayin' plenty. ~ Cub Koda

99 Chicks album
$15.09 Thirty-song compilation of big and small hits from 1958-1965 based around a rock & roll dance. Although it's imperfect and the smaller, more obscure hits simply aren't as good as the familiar smashes, it's about as good an anthology of the sort as you're going to get, due to the length and ...
| | Best Of David Sanborn CD (1994)
99 Chicks CD music
$11.19 One of the most well known figures in pop/R&B-leaning jazz, saxophonist David Sanborn had a highly successful stint with the Warner Bros. label from the mid-1970s to the mid-'80s. This collection draws 16 tracks from that period in Sanborn's career, with songs ranging from the funky "Chicago Song" to the smooth "Lesley Ann" to the spare, delicate "Lotus Blossom." For listeners whose only connection to jazz is via Kenny G, this Sanborn sampler is the ...

| | Waylon Jennings Dreaming My Dreams CD (1975) Remastered
99 Chicks album
$7.59 Principally recorded at Glaser Sound Studios and Clement Studios, Nashville, Tennessee in 1974 & 1975. Originally released on RCA (11062). Includes liner notes by Rich Kienzle.
Digitally remastered by Elliott Federman (SAJE Sound, New York, New York).
DREAMING MY DREAMS was one of the groundbreaking, Jack Clement-produced albums that helped cement Jennings' legend as a country outlaw in the mid-'70s. The fact that Jennings cares little for Nashville convention is apparent from the opening cut "Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way." Over a bed of processed guitar and thumping drums, Waylon delivers verse after verse (look ma, no chorus!) expressing his insecurities about his chosen profession as well as his pride in exploring new directions. "I ...

| | Fu Manchu Action Is Go CD (1997)
99 Chicks songs
$8.15 Not that it's unique, yet even with half the band changed from the last time around, the twin-riff action that kicks off "Evil Eye," and The Action Is Go! as a whole, sounds like nobody else but Fu Manchu, somehow. Punk energy, classic rock drive, psychedelic crunch, and heavy-ass grind all at once -- really, is anything more needed? From there the new lineup proceeds to kick ass and take names in its own way -- music to shake one's very long hair to while cranking it up and driving around. Hill's strength as a vocalist has long been that he doesn't sound like a deep, bellowing yahoo, but that nutty kid down the block who knows how to party anyway. The Action Is Go! lets him demonstrate that in spades, not to mention his guitar abilities as well as Balch's lead soloing. He and Bjork make perfect recruits for Fu Manchu -- the one pours out the heavy, never dull riffing, the other knows how to lay down some grooves and slam it out when needed in equal measure. Check out the extended zone-outs on "Burning Road" and "Trackside Hoax" to see how both can play it calm ...

| | T I Trap Muzik CD (2003)
99 Chicks CD music
$10.15 On the remarkably vulnerable "I Can't Quit," the second track on his sophomore release, TRAP MUZIK, T.I. observes "I'm this close to being a star and just this close to quitting." His 2001 debut, I'M SERIOUS, seemed a powerful can't-miss record with a title single featuring an ace turn by Beenie Man. While it didn't wholly miss, the single which should have been pumpin' around the world barely saw a lick of airplay, and while the album sold modestly, it didn't even approach the platinum level lesser talents achieved with ease.
No matter though, T.I.'s back with a vengeance on TRAP MUZIK, an appealing melange of subtle beats and easy flows which belie the Georgia rapper's vast lyrical intellect. While there are aspects of the Dirty South in T.I.'s style, his world and his style are distinctly his own--incredibly unself-conscious but confident, observational, insightful, rough, and raw. This odd mix is best represented in the starkly honest "Doin' My Job," a cry for tolerance noteworthy for its lack of either cliche ...
| | Gatsby's American Dream CD (2006)
99 Chicks music CDs
$11.65 Gatsbys American Dream are pissed -- not at their ex-girlfriends, not at Mom and Dad, not at the government. For their self-titled fourth album, they've got a giant bone to pick with the music industry. OK, it's not like this idea hasn't been explored before, but seriously, 11 tracks later and it's a marvel GAD still want to play their instruments. Not only do they stick a giant middle finger to the players behind the scene -- labels, radio execs, promoters who screw them out of show guarantees -- but the Seattle troupe also hardly spares the feelings of the general punk/indie rock scene they spawned from. They've created a sort of cautionary and cynical music seminar for that random kid buying a T-shirt at a gig or that band just starting out with big plans for itself. Opening with a drained "I'm not mad, I'm just tired," singer Nic Newsham goes on to proclaim "I know you really want to believe/You really want to but it's so much easier to look the same and sound the same to play the game." ...
