| | Gino Washington Out Of This World CD Gino Washington Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
A rip-snorting collection of Gino Washington tearing it up on 15 classics that run the gamut from early R&B to rock & roll to Northern soul. On most of the tracks he's accompanied by Jeff and the Atlantics, a local Detroit combo who also played on the Reflections' "Just Like Romeo and Juliet," the Shades of Blue's "Oh How Happy" and Edwin Starr's "Agent Double-O Soul." Jeff Williams' guitar breaks on "Out of this World" and "Gino Is a Coward" are worth the price of admission alone, while Washington's performances on the frantic "Come Monkey with Me," the soulful and smooth "Puppet on a String" and "I'll Be Around (When You Want Me)," "Like My Baby" (here in a faster alternate take), "Romeo" and the seldom-heard screamer "Baby Be Mine" make this collection a lost chapter in Detroit rock & roll history well worth owning. ~ Cub Koda
Includes liner notes by Billy Miller.Mojo (Publisher) (3/01, p.108) - "...Brings together all of Washington's Motor City recordings plus a smattering of unissued masters. 'I'll Be Around' is a slick mid-tempo Northern Soul twirler, 'Like My Baby' is charming, ramshackle, garage soul, while 'What Can A Man Do' recalls the pleading desperation of Brenton Wood's 'Gimme Little Sign'." Out Of This World songs
$14.49 (MP3 Available for Download) Though often overshadowed by higher-profile Southern R&B artists like Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett, Don Covay ranks among the greatest soul singers of the 1960s. In addition to his fantastic voice--light enough to sail through pop melodies, yet gruff enough to shake with gospel fervor--Covay is a superb songwriter. MERCY! and SEE-SAW, two albums from the mid-'60s, feature many of Covay's best songs, and find him at the peak of his form as a vocalist. This Koch two-for-one disc provides the invaluable service of putting these classic soul albums under a single cover.
The music here is irresistible, with its mix of raw, energetic ...

| | James & Bobby Purify Shake A Tail Feather! CD (2002)
Out Of This World CD music
$13.89 You couldn't ask for a better compilation of James & Bobby Purify than this one, which fits no less than 28 songs onto a single disc, all from their prime 1966-1969 Bell era. In addition to a wealth of singles, B-sides, and LP tracks, there are five previously unissued cuts, the whole deal expertly annotated. The duo was harder to fit into a niche than many soul acts of the era; although there have been some comparisons to Sam & Dave, at times their sides were more pop-oriented than what Sam & Dave cut at Memphis, particularly on songs with sophisticated production touches like vibes. At other times, though, they ...

| | Wayne Shorter Footprints Live! CD (2004)
Out Of This World music CDs
$13.99 (MP3 Available for Download) FOOTPRINTS LIVE! was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
Recorded during a Western European barnstorming tour during the summer of 2001 (jazz festival season), Wayne Shorter and his star-studded quartet draw from his deep well of distinctive original material. When listening to the high level of kinetic and at times, fiery interplay on this disc, one is reminded of Miles Davis' famous quote to his band of the 1960's, "I pay you guys to rehearse on stage." In fact, as strong as Shorter's best tunes are, the gems of this disc are the improvised sections. These guys can go from a whisper to a roar and back again at the drop of a hat, sounding almost giddy with their facility. One of the amazing things about Wayne Shorter, like fellow tenor man Sonny Rollins, is how he found a different way to go in the '60s rather than becoming a Coltrane epigone as countless others did. On FOOTPRINTS LIVE!, we can hear the prodigious and fragrant fruits of his decidedly alternative and widely influential career.
This two-disc set offers an economical, career-spanning overview of one of the most significant musicians in post-1950s jazz. A companion to the biography of the same name, FOOTPRINTS: THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF WAYNE SHORTER offers an aural chronology of the saxophonist, composer, and arranger. The set kicks off with "Lester Left Town," a Shorter original recorded in 1960 with Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, and follows up with two tracks from SPEAK NO EVIL, Shorter's Blue Note masterpiece as leader.
Shorter's residence in Miles Davis's legendary '60s quintet is represented here by the Shorter-penned tunes "E.S.P.," "Nefertiti," the gorgeous ballad "Footprints," and "Sanctuary" from BITCHES BREW. Cuts by the commercially popular Weather Report, the fusion ensemble Shorter formed with keybordist Joe ...
