Certain Smile CD music
$13.05 Big Jack Johnson & The Oilers: Big Jack Johnson (vocals, vocals); Chris Dean (guitar, background vocals); Maury "Hooter" Saslaff (bass); Chet Woodward (drums).
Johnson's WE GOT TO STOP THIS KILLIN' raised the eyebrow of many a hardcore blues fan with it's unadulterated, hard-hitting approach to a mixture of Chicago and Delta blues. The follow-up ALL THE WAY BACK continues in much the same vein as its predecessor. Again there are tunes that show Johnson's unwillingness to rely on blues tropes for lyrical inspiration. Like KILLIN', with its anti-violence title track, ALL THE WAY BACK features songs ("I Wanna Know," "Crack-Headed Woman") that are more concerned with contemporary social issues than with longhaired doneys and Terraplanes.
The sound is expanded a bit, with the addition of harp and keyboards, but the Oiler's ...
| | Spike Jones & His City Slickers Strictly For Music Lovers CDs (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Certain Smile music CDs
$21.75 This four-disc set provides the ultimate guide to the musical madness of Spike Jones, the bandleader whose inspired insanity provided comic relief whenever the mainstream musical styles of the day seemed too serious. Along with his City Slickers, Jones specialized in parodic versions of material from the worlds of pop, jazz, country, classical, you name it--no genre was safe from his sonic terrorism.
Instead of merely tacking funny lyrics onto a familiar tune, Jones took a comprehensive approach to musical mockery, filling his arrangements with everything from animal noises to shattering glass and revving machinery (was he the first proto-industrial artist?) for a truly unhinged effect. The wealth of vintage (1930/40s) material here, including Spike's deconstructions of "Tea for Two," "The Sheik of Araby," and more, makes it clear that he was the godfather of comedy in music.
Instead of merely ...

$13.55 A sleeve note helpfully divides the seven female Celtic performers on this disc into "singer-songwriter (Marian Bradfield, Fiona Joyce), Roots (Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill & Aine Furey) and experimental Celtic (Loreena McKennitt, Melanie O'Reilly & Rita Connolly)." In practice, you would say that they actually have much in common, ...

| | Richard Thompson Sweet Warrior CD (2007)
Certain Smile CD music
$12.09 Arriving in the wake of the folk-flavored, acoustic-based FRONT PARLOUR BALLADS, SWEET WARRIOR marks U.K. folk-rock hero Richard Thompson's valiant return to electric guitar fireworks. Shooting off the kind of rock-&-roll sparks that had been missing from his catalog since 1996's YOU? ME? US? Thompson reminds listeners of why he's remained one of the most revered guitar heroes of the post-Hendrix era.
SWEET WARRIOR is no self-indulgent riff-fest, though; it contains some of Thompson's most sharply written songs in years. Released amid the furor of the U.S. occupation of Iraq, "Dad's Gonna Kill Me" (the reference is a nickname for ...
