| | Joe Puma Shining Hour CD Joe Puma Discography of CDs
Cool-toned guitarist Joe Puma is best known for his playing in the 1950s. This 1997 CD reissue has a live Puma trio date from 1984, which was his first occasion to lead his own recording session since 1961. The music is quite enjoyable, featuring Puma with pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Red Mitchell. The guitarist was still very much in prime form, playing in a style unchanged from decades earlier. His interplay with O'Brien and Mitchell uplifts the standards, which include "Remember," "For All We Know" and "Mood Indigo," and he introduces two appealing originals. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
guitarist's album epitomizes the interplay & swing that happens in small jazz groups when the musicians are truly in harmony; here he is joined by Hod O'Brien-pno & late bassist Red Mitchell

| | Tal Farlow Autumn Leaves CDs (2003)
Shining Hour album
$15.89 During the 1950s, Tal Farlow recorded a wonderful series of albums that established him as one of the premiere bop/cool guitarists. He recorded less frequently in the '60s, '70s, and '80s, preferring to stay out of the limelight. Autumn Leaves consists of two discs Farlow recorded for Concord: Tal Farlow '78 and The Legendary Tal Farlow (1985). When a great player like Farlow revives his career 20 years later, it seems customary, though a bit impolite, to ask: can he play as well as he once could? The easy answer is yes, he plays with the same finesse and speed (though it's hard to tell: his fingers move extremely fast), but this should be qualified by noting that his overall approach has mellowed during the interval. On the first disc Farlow is joined by bassist Gary Mazzaroppi and drummer Tom Sayek for a straight-ahead trio set. Ballads ("Here's That Rainy Day" and "Autumn Leaves") and barnburners ("Mahoney's 11 Ohms" and "With the Wind and the Rain in Your Hair") get equal billing, which means the album goes down like a perfectly balanced ...

| | Gennett Rarities CD (1998)
Shining Hour album
$16.79 Recorded in Birmingham, AL and Richmond, IN between July 1927 and October 1929, the performances reissued on this compilation are precious examples of musical entertainments commonly encountered in the Midwest and the Deep South during the years immediately preceding the Great Depression. Based in Richmond, Henry Gennett's Starr Piano Company had begun making records to sell with its phonographs in 1916; for various practical as well as legal reasons, after the end of the First World War the recording division switched to lateral rather than vertical-cut technology, and the label itself was changed from Starr to Gennett. Henry Gennett's youngest son Fred was the individual who suggested the name change. He was also responsible for the ambitious expansion of the company's catalog to include an ever-increasing number of non-white musicians. In December 1926 Fred Gennett conducted an experimental field expedition to Arizona where he recorded the songs of Hopi Indians with the intention of peddling the records to tourists visiting the Grand Canyon. About a dozen selections, with titles like "Tuwina'Av" and "Tacheuktu Katcina" were issued in early 1927. By the summer of that year young Gennett was supervising a series of recording sessions that were held in a makeshift recording studio on the third floor of the Starr Piano Store at 1820 Third Avenue South in Birmingham, AL Unlike the Hopi discs and most everything that had appeared previously on Gennett, these platters were made using the innovative General Electric recording apparatus. The range of styles and genres was ...

| | Bombshell Baby Of Bombay Bouncin Nightclub Bombay Connection, Vol. 2: Bombshell Baby Of Bombay: Bouncin' Nightclub Grooves... CD (2006)
Shining Hour CD music
$15.05 The second disc in the series of classic Bollywood songs covered by the Bombay Connection label steps back a bit in time from the first disc, focusing instead on, to quote the sleeve, "bouncin' nightclub grooves from Bollywood films, 1959-1972." As an illuminating liner note essay from Naresh Fernandes explains, many films during that era featured a nightclub sequence either as backdrop or as a central location, often to showcase a new and often (to conservative values) threatening moral modernity. As a bit of having one's cake and eating it too, it was a clever move, but even smarter was getting some great music, and once more the series compilers have struck gold with a slew of fantastic songs. The most famous song to American audiences would be "Jan Pahechan Ho," originally from the 1965 film Gumnaam but featured in a brief but notable clip in the film Ghost World many years later. In full it's a brilliant, dramatic number, ...
