| | Hod O'Brien Ridin' High CD Hod O'Brien Discography of CDs
Although he has never had much fame, Hod O'Brien was one of the top bebop pianists of the 1990s. His style is straight from Bud Powell and Al Haig (there are no Bill Evans voicings), yet does not sound derivative and reflects his own musical personality. On this excellent CD, O'Brien is teamed with bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Kenny Washington in a trio. He performs seven standards (including "There's No You," "You & the Night & the Music," and "Yardbird Suite") plus three of his swinging originals (highlighted by "Portrait of Stephanie" for his wife, singer Stephanie Nakasian). O'Brien has always been a very consistent player, so all of his occasional recordings are well worth picking up. This excellent outing is no exception. ~ Scott Yanow
Hod feels that this is his best album to date, tri w. Ray Drummond on bass, & Kenny Washington on drums

| | Mushroom Glazed Popems CDs (2004)
Ridin' High songs
$13.69 Glazed Popems is a specially priced double CD of instrumental jams featuring one disc ("London") that was inspired by late-'60s psychedelia and acid folk (e.g., the Incredible String Band) and one disc ("Oakland") with a funkier fusion and progressive rock sound. In addition to references to the Beatles, Bert Jansch, Led Zeppelin, and the site of a major '60s music festival ("Isle of Wight"), the song titles on the "London" disc display a playful sense of humor that is reflected in the band's performances (although the best title, "Just Because Nobody Understands You, That Doesn't Mean You're an Artist," corresponds to the weakest track on the disc). The musicianship is generally impressive, including standout work by guitarist Erik Pearson, most notably his soloing on "Pink Island" and interplay with pianist Brian Felix on "You and I Have Memories, Longer Than the Road That Stretches Out Ahead." The musicianship is equally impressive on the second disc, with standouts including saxophonist and woodwind player Ralph Carney. The group settles into a smooth, relaxing quiet storm groove on "Tonite Let's All Make Love in Oakland," which features Pearson on flute, and "Blues for Bobby Seale," which features Michael Rinta on horn instruments. The band also ventures into post-rock territory in the appropriately titled "This Goes Squonk!," and you can hear traces of Krautrock influences as well. Despite the range of influences and total running time of over 90 minutes, Glazed Popems holds together as a coherent and listenable album. ~ Todd Kristel
Mushroom's instrumental psychedelic jazz rock has a cinematic and thematic vibe. Their music has been short listed several times for use in major movie soundtracks (most recently for Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill films) and several indie film-makers have used their services, notably a PBS documentary on San Francisco's drug/underworld counter-culture.Glazed Popems - Mushroom's double album (a 2 CD set) features a "London" and an "Oakland" disc. When new keyboardist Matt Cunitz arrived with an original 1960's Mellotron (love those cello and string sounds) and a vintage electric Harpsichord much of the material shifted to Mushroom's early 1970's English "art rock" roots; vintage King Crimson, post-Syd Barrett/pre-Dark Side Of The Moon era Pink Floyd, the folky acoustic vibe of Led Zeppelin III, and the organic jazz rock of Traffic. The "London" disc represents these influences coupled with "acid folk". No surprise when you consider Mushroom band leader/producer Pat Thomas spent a year before forming Mushroom traveling through the English countryside where he had the pleasure ...
