w. Pepper Adams, John Hicks, Ray Drummond, Billy Hart, from 1984 and 1988, originals and classics
Personnel: Peter Leitch (guitar); Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone); John Hicks (piano); Ray Drummond (bass); Billy Hart (drums). Recorded in 1984 and 1988. Personnel: Peter Leitch (guitar); Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone); John Hicks (piano); Billy Hart (drums). Liner Note Author: Kevin Whitehead. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (11/17/1984-12/06/1988). This combination works quite well. The mellow-toned but hard swinging guitarist Peter Leitch teams up with baritonist Pepper Adams, pianist John Hicks, bassist Ray Drummond, and drummer Billy Hart for three Thelonious Monk tunes ("'Round Midnight," "Trinkle Tinkle," and "Played Twice"), two of the guitarist's originals, and "How Deep Is the Ocean." Adams' presence inspires and seems to light a fire under Leitch, who is heard throughout in passionate form. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
Down Beat (1/92, p.32) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "...clean toned, fat-body guitar and clean-tooled, imaginative lines...His phrasing defies guitaristic cliches and reflects a horn player's flexibility..." Option (Jan/Feb 92) - Recommended - "...This is a very tasty, very swinging release..." Peter Leitch Exhilaration Songs | 1. | Exhilaration |

$12.35 Personnel: Teena Marie (vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming); Smokey Robinson (vocals); Kurupt (rap vocals); Gerald Albright (saxophone); George Duke (piano). 2006's SAPPHIRE is not only Teena Marie's best release in some time (even trumping her fine 2004 "comeback" album, LA DONA), it may be her best album since her early '80s heyday. Lengthy and sprawling, yet packed with superb songwriting, vocal performances, and production, Marie proves she is still one of the strongest talents on the contemporary R&B scene, her age (50) and her race (white) notwithstanding. SAPPHIRE boasts vintage smooth-soul tunes ("Cruise Control" is sung with the architect of smooth soul himself, Smokey Robinson), bumping dance-pop ("Make It Hot"), and even nods to G-funk ("Love Is a Gangsta"), proving Teena Marie can keep it as fresh and real as any R&B upstart from the 2000s. Teena Marie's Sapphire -- named after a nickname given to her by onetime partner and late funk legend Rick James -- doesn't sound like the work of a 50-year-old artist. While 2004's La Doņa, Marie's first commercially released album since 1990, hardly sounded like the work of a 48-year-old artist, it's clear that she was only getting started (again). As with La Doņa, there's the odd verse where Marie sounds like she's trying too hard to be hip. Longtime fans might also be a little surprised to hear Marie more sexed-up than ever, but any faults or jarring traits are canceled out by the supreme excellence of Marie's voice and the quality of the songs she has written and produced. (She gets some assistance, along with some guest spots from Smokey Robinson, George Duke, Gerald Albright, ...
