As has been noted in other reviews of Nick Brignola's recordings on Reservoir Records, these are the best renderings of a true baritone sax artist. The title cut on this album is worth the price of admission alone. Brignola takes Ahmad Jamal's version of the same song to another plane and almost doubles the length. He stretches it out to places where Café, the great Brazilian percussionist, can put in percussion both delicate and sensual. The title cut is unforgettable and to be reckoned with. There's hard bop and swing here, too. There are very sensitive and forward takes on "A Ghost of a Chance" and "When You Wish Upon a Star." Billy Strayhorn's "Upper Manhattan Medical Group" is another track that blisters with energy. "April Mist" is a samba that moves right along the path. Brignola had an uncanny ability to combine his muscular phrasing with a supreme sensitivity. Nick Brignola never got the recognition that he deserved while alive, which is common with jazz musicians. But that doesn't mean that their work won't live forever in the form of recorded music. Highly recommended for jazz fans and listeners who want to go beyond musical categories. ~ Mark Romano

If the average new age fan were to encounter the debut album by Maya & Sage in a record store, the cover, Barry Stevens' painting, "Mandala 'Radiance'," which shows a man and a woman in traditional Indian style, likely would suggest to that potential buyer that the album Spirit of Love, subtitled Devotional Chanting & Spiritual Love Songs, was an album of contemplative music with a becalmed, ethereal tone. It is not. While Maya Knowles and her harmonizing husband Sage Knowles do sing repetitive phrases in Sanskrit at several points on the disc, notably the tracks "Jai Sita Ram" and "Lakshmi Ma," Spirit of Love is not really an album to meditate to. It's more an album to dance to, especially for fans of late-'60s pop music. With Maya's reedy voice and catchy tunes matched to Sage's folk-rock arrangements, the songs and performances recall several one-hit-wonder duos of the 1968-1969 period, Friend & Lover ("Reach Out of the Darkness"), Esther & Abi Ofarim ("Cinderella Rockefella"), and even Zager & Evans ("In the Year 2525"), who were both men. If these references are a little too obscure, imagine the Mamas & the Papas or Spanky & Our Gang singing in Sanskrit; there's some of that sunshine pop flavor here. Spirit of Love is likely to get its spiritual fans bopping around the ashram instead of sitting in the lotus position with their eyes closed; just don't buy it if you're looking to go into a trance that doesn't involve dancing. ~ William Rulhmann

On the Fly is a nice album of straightforward jazz from New York trumpeter Liam Sillery. He combines with L.A.'s David Sills and his compatriots, who add a strong rhythm section to his horn work. In particular, organist Joe Bagg continually steals the show, often in combination with Tim Pleasant on drums. The horns provide some give and take, and pull out a few nice solos, but the real excitement often happens when the rest of the bandmembers break out for their solo bars. The album opens with the title track, a hopping piece in the vein of the post-bop aesthetic. From there, it moves into a slower piece, which is followed by a groove-inflected showcase for the horns in "Fontok." "Down the Line" ...
