| | Hod O'Brien So That's How It Is CD Hod O'Brien Discography of CDs
Hod O'Brien has been around the jazz scene since the early 1950s, though he is unjustly overlooked by many critics and radio programmers. This 1997 trio session for Reservoir with bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Kenny Washington reaffirms his value as a contributor to jazz. He more than does justice to a trio of pieces from the Great American Songbook ("Cheek to Cheek," "Where or When" and "Will You Still Be Mine?"). It's also nice to hear obscurities like Victor Feldman's rapid fire "Exodus" or Quincy Jones' loping "Meet Benny Bailey" played with a freshness that makes one wonder why the piece has laid dormant so long. He also debuts "Ultramarine," a new composition by Warren Chiasson in a light swinging samba arrangement, and a brand new original, "Little Ronnie's Here," a charming bossa nova. The intimate sound of Rudy Van Gelder's recording of the trio makes it seem like a private concert, while the listener can supply the applause. ~ Ken Dryden

So That's How It Is music CDs
$31.45 "Walkin'" is taken at the kind of jaunty tempo that distinguished the Wynton Kelly-Paul Chambers-Jimmy Cobb rhythm axis. Paul Chambers' buoyant, effortless beat, his sure sense of harmony and swing, and his resounding brand of melodic bass (dig his little bowed break at the conclusion of "Walkin'") are the glue which hold these performances together. On "Walkin'" he and Jimmy Cobb lock up the groove as if swinging were the same as breathing, allowing Kelly to engage the trumpeter in a continual dialogue, feinting counterpoint and feeding him his favorite chords, then dropping away to allow Miles to stroll for a taste.
Kelly's joy is infectious on the band's old warhorse "Bye Bye Blackbird" and the easy-going ballad "All Of You," where he seems to particularly inspire a laid back ...

Eddie South was a talented jazz violinist who never really achieved the fame that he deserved; though he was a contemporary of Stéphane Grappelli and Stuff Smith, most of his work was for radio and films. As a result, relatively few of his recordings have appeared on CD. So the discovery of 16 of his earliest radio transcription programs, all sponsored by a women's beauty product called Cheloni-Skin, is an important find. They are collected in their entirety on this three-CD compilation, complete with unidentified announcers (and commercials if there is a music bed by South). While the performances ranges from easy listening to Latin pop ...
| | Hod O'Brien Live At Blues Alley: Third Set CD (2007)
So That's How It Is CD music
$13.85 Musicians can be notoriously picky about choosing tracks from live gigs, but rest assured that this third volume of performances taken from Hod O'Brien's July 2004 stint at Blues Alley is a collection worthy of comparison to the first two volumes, even though the pianist explains in the liner notes that he previously rejected some of them. First of all, what seems like a flaw to a seasoned player may go unnoticed to most fans, particularly since someone of O'Brien's caliber is usually able to improvise off a momentary slip and continue without distraction. It also doesn't hurt that his rhythm section ...
