In 1978, Johnny Hartman was featured twice on Alec Wilder's legendary radio series. This 1998 CD has all of the music from those dates (released commercially for the first time) with Hartman being tastefully accompanied by pianist Loonis McGlohon, bassist Terry Lassiter and drummer James Lackey. Fifty-five at the time, Hartman was still in prime form, as he shows throughout the lengthy set of ballads. All of the songs are standards, although a couple (such as "The Morning After" and the Ellington/Strayhorn number, "You Better Know It") are lesser-known. The title cut is actually a vocalized version of Strayhorn's "Lotus Blossom." Other highlights include "I'm Glad There Is You," "Easy to Love," two versions of "Warm Valley" and a remake of "Lush Life." ~ Scott Yanow

| | Carla Helmbrecht Be Cool Be Kind CD (2001)
Thank You For Everything CD music
$12.89 Carla Helmbrecht graduated summa cum laude from that school of vocalists who believe that in order to be effective, they don't have to indulge in vocal tricks, become overemotional, or even overdo dynamics by singing loud and then even louder. Rather, her approach is cool, languid, laid-back (as distinguished from laid out), and gently fervent. On her second release for Heart Music, Be Cool Be Kind has a program that allows Helmbrecht to forego up-tempo rhythms, living comfortably with the slow and medium pace. The most excitable she gets is on "Easy Love," which she wrote with her piano player, Peter Horvath. This track also reveals that she has a cute ingenue side about her. Helmbrecht's style results in pleasant but credible off-the-beaten-track interpretations. "The Party's Over," normally done with much emoting, comes off matter of fact here, as in "It's over and done with so get used to it." (Contrast this with the version by Anita ...
| | Carla Cook Dem Bones CD (2001)
Thank You For Everything music CDs
$14.59 Carla Cook's Dem Bones follows her critically acclaimed and commercially successful Maxjazz debut, It's All About Love. The Grammy-nominated artist taps into her diverse musical influences and presents a musical autobiography reflected in 11 songs. The precision of her multi-hued voice is accompanied by such great musicians as Cyrus Chestnut on piano; Fred Wesley, Craig Harris, and Tyrone Jefferson on trombones; James Genus on bass; and Billy Kilson on drums. Packed with straight-ahead jazz, the crowning glory on this CD is the approach she uses on the title cut, "Dem Bones." Tastefully arranged for three trombones (her voice being the fourth "bone") Cook's presentation adds a modern dimension to the use of the trombone -- both muted and open -- as an expressive "voice" in a jazz composition. Wesley, Craig, and ...
| | Alan Broadbent The Music of Eric Von Essen Vol. 2 CD (2001)
Thank You For Everything songs
$14.29 Recorded between February 11 and August 22, 1999. Includes liner notes by Kirk Silsbee and Jeff Gauthier.
The second of three projected volumes of music by the late bassist/composer Eric von Essen, who passed away at the age of 43, is -- like its predecessor -- a purposely mixed bag. A composer of straight modern jazz tunes to gypsy blues-jazz to pop to pieces that border on theater and classical music, von Essen was nothing if not a lover of diverse musics, and well-versed in their compositional vocabularies. All of his work was equally possessed of movement, however; there was no stasis in his compositional language. Five different ensembles ranging from quintet to trio perform two pieces each, and add more to the mystery of von Essen the virtuoso musician. The first two pieces, "Blues for John" and "K," are post-bop tunes that soar with the aegis of modern electric post-bop jazz. Larry Koonse's electric guitar and Stacy Rowles' trumpet and flügelhorn are perfect foils for one another. As Koonse takes ...
| | Jimmy Scott Over The Rainbow CD (2001)
Thank You For Everything album
$13.15 There have been few 75-year-old vocalists working in any popular music style that sounded as good as Scott did on this session from late 2000, aided by contributions from top players like Joe Beck (guitar) and Grady Tate (drums). Scott loves those sentimental songs, and this set is full of standards in that vein, from the title track and "Pennies From Heaven" to "P.S. I Love You" (the Jenkins-Mercer composition, not the Beatles song) and "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)." For the most part the arrangements are appropriately small-scale, letting Scott's voice hog the foreground and squeeze plenty of nuances from his sad vibrato. "Over the Rainbow" itself suffers from an excessive ...
