Fourteen years after her last record, singer Lee Wiley came back for one final studio recording. Although she does a good job on "Indiana" and "I'm Coming, Virginia" and the backup band (which includes trumpeter Rusty Dedrick, clarinetist Johnny Mince, trombonist Buddy Morrow, and pianist Dick Hyman) is excellent, in general this is a disappointing LP. Wiley's voice was no longer in its prime and, although her distinctive phrasing was still intact, her earlier sessions are far superior while her final Carnegie Hall recording is much more emotional and historic. This album is only recommended to Lee Wiley completists. [The CD version released by Audiophile tacks on a 1965 demo session recorded with Joe Bushkin.] ~ Scott Yanow

| | Lee Wiley Night In Manhattan/Sings Vincent Youmans/Sings Irving Berlin CD (2001)
Back Home Again songs
$13.59 Although it took nearly half a century, vocalist Lee Wiley's most prolific and oft-requested post-World War II recordings have been compiled and reissued in their entirety. This single CD gathers Wiley's trio of 10" EPs cut for Columbia in the early '50s -- including the universally acclaimed Night in Manhattan (1951) as well as Sings Vincent Youmans (1951) and Sings Irving Berlin (1951). When these titles were first issued, Wiley had already experienced significant success as a traditional pop and torch vocalist during the '30s -- supported by, among others, the Dorseys, Johnny Green, and the Casa Loma Orchestra. Although all three of these titles could rightly be considered as concept or thematic collections, it was Night in Manhattan that truly captured the varied moods and sounds of New York City after hours. Wiley's distinct organic and full-bodied timbre animates songs such as "Any Time, Any Day, Anywhere" and "(I Don't Stand) A Ghost of a Chance (With You)" with an intangible sense of a forlorn soul. Accompanying Wiley on these sides are Bobby Hackett and Joe Bushkin & His Swinging Strings. The Youmans and Berlin sets ...
| | Barney Kessel Breakfast At Tiffany's/Bossa Nova/Contemporary Latin Rhythms CDs (2002)
Back Home Again album
$12.29 Conte Candoli (trumpet); Victor Feldman (vibraphone); Emil Richards (marimba); Keith Mitchell (bass); Earl Palmer, Stan Levey (drums).
Originally released on Reprise (6019), Reprise (6049) & Reprise (6073).
This double CD is more about Barney Kessel the studio player than Kessel the jazz guitar legend. Still, this compilation of three LPs originally released between 1961-1963 has some good music, and Kessel the jazz man is not entirely absent, even though the settings do not call for him to stretch out.
Breakfast at Tiffany's is Kessel's handling of Henry Mancini's music from the classic Blake Edwards film with Audrey Hepburn. With a number entitled "Moon River Cha Cha," listeners pretty much know what's in store for them with this set: instrumental treatments of pop music that was riding high both on the airwaves ...

| | Richie Havens Grace Of The Sun CD (2004)
Back Home Again CD music
$13.79 After years of recording for a variety of labels, Richie Havens returned to his own imprint with 2004's GRACE OF THE SUN. (He originally created this company over 30 years earlier to release not just his own music, but that of talented folk-rock unknowns such as Bob Brown and Montreal.) Happily, Havens shies away from outsized production techniques, utilizing a small-scale, acoustic-oriented approach strongly flavored by World Music (bouzouki, shakuhachi, Turkish violin, and tabla all play a part).
While Havens is best known as an imaginative interpreter of other people's material, he penned the majority of the songs here, and they stand up quite well. That's no small feat when you consider that the songwriters he chooses to cover include Bob Dylan (a polyrhythmic "All Along the Watchtower"), ...
