| | Pfister Sisters All's Well That's Boswell CD Pfister Sisters Discography of CDs
Formed in 1980, the Pfister Sisters (a vocal trio consisting of the unrelated Holley Bendtsen, Suzy Malone, and Yvette Voelker-Cuccia) have long considered the Boswell Sisters to be their role models. This Boswell Sisters tribute is the logical result. Fourteen of the Boswells' recordings are recreated along with two pieces ("Close Farm-Ony Medley" and "When It's Sleepy Time Down South") taken from films. Although, of course, not as original as the Boswells, the Pfisters do an excellent job of bringing back the spirit and the tricky arrangements of what was arguably jazz's greatest vocal group. They are assisted by an octet that includes pianist Amasa Miller, clarinetist Tim Laughlin, violinist Tom Morley, and trumpeter Charlie Miller. ~ Scott Yanow

Among white blues singers of the 1960s, there were some who studied the music so intently they amazed even the genre's creators with their technical mastery. A select few, however, seemed to be born oozing authenticity, sounding just as soulful as the greatest black bluesmen while forging a completely new sound. Johnny Winter belonged in the second category. A long-haired hippie albino, he astounded initially skeptical listeners with his Howlin' Wolf-like vocals and wild Johnny Guitar Watson-esque guitar stylings. THE WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE showcases Winter's first taste of national exposure, first with his 1969 self-titled debut album, and ...

| | Sue Foley Where The Action Is CD (2002)
All's Well That's Boswell
$14.65 Sue Foley's seventh studio album in a decade successfully follows on the heels of 2000's terrific Love Comin' Down. Less atmospheric and harder rocking, Foley writes or co-writes all but three tracks, and proves herself as talented a composer as singer and guitar slinger. There's a bit of a Sheryl Crow feel to lots of this, but Foley stays locked in a blues vein, even on the more melodic rockers like "Baby Where Are You," "Get Yourself Together," and the mid-tempo title track. Colin Linden's hands-off production lets the songs breath, and the singer sounds loose, relaxed, and in control throughout, especially on ballads like the emotional "Let It Go." "Vertigo Blues" wades into primitive and swampy Creedence waters, aided by the album's only bass-less backing, featuring Linden on eerie, slithering slide and Bryan Owings' dark, pounding drums. A lumbering stab at the Stones' "Stupid Girl" sounds too self-conscious, but versions ...
