$12.09 | | Bishop Paul S Morton, Sr We Offer Christ CD (1993)
Crescent City Fire album
$13.45 The title cut on the We Offer Christ CD is often used as the invitational hymn at Greater St. Stephens Full Gospel Baptist Church in New Orleans The song, penned by Greater St. Stephen's minister of music, Phillip Britton, has a special appeal in its sincere simplicity. It is sung on the CD by the church's senior pastor, Bishop Paul S. Morton, backed by the Greater St. Stephens Mass Choir. The power of these voices has brought many to the altar, seeking salvation or membership in the great church of 20,000 people. Both Morton and the GSS Mass Choir are internationally renowned for their musical abilities. The GSS Mass Choir have been awarded the coveted Stellar Award for best contemporary gospel choir in the nation. Morton has a singular power to get the message over, which has earned him the esteem of an international audience. He possesses a beautiful voice, but it is more than that; he will tell you that it is the power of the Holy Ghost working through him that deserves the praise. That compelling quality can be heard on the tune "Your Tears," one of the great pastor's most popular hits. When he sings that "God is ...

| | Poco Very Best Of CD (1975) (Import) United Kingdom
Crescent City Fire music CDs
$18.39 Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
VERY BEST OF POCO is a fine set with a generous track list (it was originally a two-record package) which includes the group's most well-known cuts. Though they existed in the shadow of the Eagles, and were plagued by constant personnel changes, Poco stood as one of the finest country rock bands of the 1970s, a claim supported by the excellent material on VERY BEST OF.
Since the set was released in 1975, it provides a substantial cross-section of the band's early work, particularly the line-up featuring Richie Furay and Jim Messina. Characterized by a driving sound, high, sweet group harmonies, and a fair bit of twang, Poco are the missing link between the Byrds' SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO and the Eagles' sleek, mainstream sound.

Originally a two-LP set, The Very Best of Poco was a decent compilation in its time, assembling the group's best-known songs from singles and album cuts in a straightforward order with no particular surprises. It was reissued with upgraded sound in 1999, and for the very casual fan with a budget to consider the latter is adequate, showing their evolution as a band from the first flourish of their birth -- as an offshoot of the Buffalo Springfield, with the same sort of vast potential displayed by the latter group (similarly unrealized by constant membership changes) -- into one of the premiere country-rock outfits of the 1970s. Anyone serious about a deep enjoyment of the group, however, will opt for the more extensive and revelatory The Forgotten Trail instead, which contains numerous outtakes and -- no ...

| | Barry Manilow Greatest Songs Of The Fifties CD (2006) (Import)
Crescent City Fire CD music
$14.45 A significant album for Barry Manilow, THE GREATEST SONGS OF THE FIFTIES finds the Brooklyn-born crooner taking on tunes that were popular in his youth. This 2006 outing also marks Manilow's return to his former label, Arista, with the company's founder, Clive Davis, setting the singer up with 1950s pop classics much in the way that the savvy businessman steered Rod Stewart in the direction of jazzy standards.
The result is a light, breezy affair that showcases Manilow's easy-going charm, as revealed on his gentle versions of the Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody" and the Everly Brothers' "All I Have to Do Is Dream." Wisely avoiding over-the-top arrangements, this record presents a lush, restrained sound that allows Manilow's velvety voice to shine, making it one of the performer's finest studio albums in decades.
A companion piece to the similarly self-explanatory GREATEST SONGS OF THE FIFTIES, GREATEST SONGS OF THE SIXTIES finds Barry Manilow tackling the pop songbook of the decade ...
