An interesting collection of singles and posthumously archived material created in the same way as Hendrix's CRASH LANDING and The Beatles "Free as a Bird," (albeit with most of the original musicians), CONFRONTATION is more consistent than one would expect and includes at least one certified classic in "Buffalo Soldier." The record features some very tasty guitar, good vocal performances and the always rock-steady rhythm section of the Barrett brothers. While not absolutely essential, it should certainly be ...

There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of ...

| | Warren Brothers Well Deserved Obscurity CD (2004)
Victory CD music
$15.45 The Warren Brothers are a band that make you think of those groups that fall out of favor with Nashville but still maintain a loyal following with a warm roots sound. The opening, piano-laced "Comeback" even states this idea with the line "new music ain't got no soul." The song is a mid-tempo, Americana tune that could have graced early Uncle Tupelo or Ryan Adams albums. The brothers also weave a fine singer/songwriter tune entitled "Between The River and Me" which resembles the duo of Kevin Welch and Kieran Kane's approach to the memorable tune. The chorus is a bit too rock-oriented but the verses and mandolin seem to compensate adequately for the Zeppelin-esque bridge. They nail "Change" much better with a focused roots rocker that pays off with the strong chorus and twang-tinted snarl. They settle into a mid-tempo pop style with "Southern Baptist Heartbreak" that saunters ...
| | Upsetters Scratch The Upsetter Again CD (1995) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Victory music CDs
$9.29 Additional personnel includes: Alva Lewis (guitar); Glen Adams (keyboards); Aston Barrett (bass); Carlton Barrett (drums).
Though the lineup of the Upsetters continually shifted throughout the 1960s and early '70s, the group is widely recognized as one of the finest backing bands in reggae history. Under the direction of Lee "Scratch" Perry, who produced and often played with the ensemble (they were something of a house band for the many records cut at Perry's Upsetter studio), the Upsetters not only accompanied vocalists, but also recorded and released their own instrumental tracks. Their tight-knit, groove-oriented chemistry was often augmented by Perry's progressive studio trickery.
SCRATCH THE UPSETTER AGAIN draws from sessions primarily cut in 1970, and finds the Upsetters straddling the fence between the R&B- and ska-influenced sound of the late '60s and the deep roots vibe developing at the time. There are also traces of Perry's emerging dub experiments, with many tracks sporting a skeletal rhythmic architecture, washes of reverb, echo, and shuddering sound effects. While a few songs feature lead vocalists, Dave Barker's version of "Will You Still Love Me," for example, and Prince Miller's proto-rap on "Mule Train," SCRATCH is largely instrumental, with plenty of bouncing bottom and heady melody to satisfy reggae fans. The addition of 10 bonus tracks makes this collection a particular treasure.
David Katz, author of the excellent Lee "Scratch" Perry bio People Funny Boy, puts 1970's Scratch the Upsetter Again into perspective in the liner notes for this reissue. He makes an excellent argument that 1970 was a happy, easier-than-usual-year for Perry -- now riding high on the success of the "People Funny Boy" single and the Return of Django album -- and that the ease of the times was reflected in the producer's music. He also points out that Perry hadn't yet become the spaceman/crazed scientist he would later be and that Scratch the Upsetter Again is the cool quiet before ...
