| | Archer Prewitt In The Sun CD Archer Prewitt Discography of CDs
After distinguished tours of duty with lounge-pop pioneers the Coctails and post-rock innovators the Sea and Cake, Archer Prewitt finally steps out on his own with In the Sun, a buoyant and impeccably crafted record whose spare, gently insistent pop approach channels the creative spirit of his previous projects even as it stakes out territory entirely its own. While the slinky "Rush Hour" and "Work" offer up wry funk-pop grooves and the regal instrumental "You Walk By" anticipates the full-blown string and horn arrangements of the superior follow-up White Sky, by and large In the Sun maintains a simple, straightforward presence -- Prewitt's clever melodies don't need much adornment to sink in, relying instead on his tasteful guitar leads and warm, intimate vocals. ~ Jason Ankeny

Option (7-8/97, pp.122-123) - "...Prewitt's pleasantly bland voice and gently played guitar keep the songs spare and light....Overall, IN THE SUN shows there's some real strength in this singer-songwriter's delicate muscles." Musician (7/97, p.90) - "...His suave, resonant croon, well-documented taste for jazzy Bacharach-style horn and string arrangements, and apparent desire to return to the days of sensitive singer/songwriter mellow-drama are focused into a vision [his former band] the eclectic Coctails could never accommodate..." NME (Magazine) (6/21/97, p.56) - "...Here is an individual of impeccable and idiosyncratic tastes, who has crafted an album that recalls both the sorrow of Nick Drake and the intricacies of Felt....he writes songs of scuffed beauty and astonishing originality..." $9.55 LUNA SEA includes four songs that were unused from the original recording sessions for the album.
After introducing their mild, country-rock charm with 1976's Firefall, Rick Roberts and the band were right back at it a year later with Luna Sea. Following in the footsteps of their debut release, Luna Sea attached the same type of silky harmonies to light, breezy acoustics which confirmed the band's comfortable residence in their genre. Although Firefall's first album contained three hit singles (two of them making the Top 40), Luna Sea has Roberts fully revealing the influences that the Flying Burrito Brothers had on him during his stint with the group. Like their first album, Luna Sea went gold, and it netted them a number 11 hit with the glistening "Just Remember I Love You," with Timothy B. Schmit helping out on background vocals. "So Long" was also a minor hit, while the rest of the tracks are made up of typical love song material that draw more attention from their smooth AM sound than their actual lyrics. Firefall continued their success with 1978's Elan, which also sported a hit in "Strange Way," while the album itself went platinum. ~ Mike DeGagne
2002 reissue features 'So Long', 'Someday Soon' and the hit 'Just Remember I Love You' with background vocals by Poco/Eagles member Timothy B. Schmidt. Originally released in 1977. Collectables.

In The Sun album
$16.79 Recorded from September to November 1968. Includes liner notes by Carlo Wolff.
The Climax Chicago Blues Band--not from Chicago at all, but from Stafford, England--were major participants in the 1960s British blues-rock scene. This classic 1969 debut record, recorded before the condensed their name to Climax Blues Band, hints at the power demonstrated on successive albums.
The Climax Chicago Blues Band were arguably the epiphany of the British beat movement or, at the very least, its epitaph. In any case, the group's 1968 debut self-titled album was pretty much the last gasp of a scene swiftly mutating into new genres entirely -- prog rock, space rock, hard rock and psychedelia among them. But out of this musical maelstrom popped the Climax Blues Band (they promptly dropped "Chicago" from their moniker soon after their album was released), birthed from the remnants of the little noticed Beat era band Hipster Image, and its equally unheralded successor the Gospel Truth. Still blues to the core, half their album was comprised of covers, penned or performed by the likes of Sonny Boy Williamson II, Howlin' Wolf, Big Bill Broonzy, and Jimmy Reed, while their originals were much in the same vein.
Inevitably, it was the superb interplay between guitarists Peter Haycock and Derek Holt that elicited the most comment ...
