Released in both English and Spanish versions, Voodoo Glow Skulls' 1995 effort may have been one of the high points in popularity for the seven-member ska-punk outfit. Unlike some more laid-back performers in the genre, and coming from a time before the style was commercially successful, Voodoo Glow Skulls are a bit more heavy-handed on the punk part of the mix, resulting in consistently fast-paced and chugging song structures that occasionally erupt into triumphant horn breakdowns and chanted group vocals. The unfortunate aspect of this equation is that the band really isn't that great at punk rock, and the tracks tend to get muddled on a few occasions, though the group's ska stylings very nearly save the day a number of times. A cover of the traditional "Charlie Brown" and a few Spanish numbers come off pretty well, but at other points the band is just too juvenile to really make an impact. The disc also includes "Fat Randy," one of the group's more convincing ska-punk hybrids, whose kinetic horn parts and metal choruses earned it a bit of airplay in the mid-'90s. ...

Band Geek Mafia finds Voodoo Glow Skulls somewhat coming into their own, developing a cross between ska and punk that isn't quite ska-punk but has many of its same attributes. It's energetic, punchy, and irreverent -- and all of these are both blessings and curses, depending on your point of view. If you don't have a silly sense of humor, the record could get on your nerves, which might mean that you won't notice the fact that Voodoo Glow Skulls are musically more astute than many of their peers. Sixteen years ago, these greater-L.A. punks released an EP everyone laughed along with (the first non-Bad Religion record on the mighty Epitaph), with its novelty underground radio hit "Urban Struggle (I Want to be a Cowboy)." Who'd have thought the Vandals would still be around, making the same herky-jerky punk, with the same sense of humor? There have been times over their LPs that they've gotten a bit coarse (but remained funny, like the sexual double-entendre here of "Cafe 405"), but their lyrics could make the straightest financial analyst laugh. "My Girlfriend's Dead" is hilarious, a nutty solution for someone who's been dumped and hates being asked what happened ("I say it's leukemia or sometimes bulimia or a great big truck ran over her")! Not only are the words funny, but just as "Urban Struggle" lampooned Western movies' music and archetypes, "Money's Not an Issue" briefly sends up the worst big oldies band ever, Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, and "Too Much Drama" trashes TV sitcoms.
