Backbeat Acid Jazz Allstars, Vol. 1 album
$9.09 This U.K. trio injects the aesthetics of trip-hop with a lush, languid, easy-listening air for a concoction that demands a deep, comfortable couch and a top-of-the-line set of headphones. The hypnotic, understated delivery of vocalist Skye Edwards floats over the sweeping synth arrangements, slide guitar, Hammond organ, and subtle technological trickery of brothers Ross and Paul Godfrey. WHO CAN YOU TRUST?, the band's full-length debut, includes the singles "Trigger Hippie," "Tape Loop," and "The Music That We Hear."
Atmosphere is paramount for Morcheeba, and TRUST's track list passes through a spectrum of colors. The opener, "Moog Island," ...
| | Marcus Miller M2 CD (2001)
Backbeat Acid Jazz Allstars, Vol. 1 CD music
$12.65 Principally recorded at Hannibal Studios, Santa Monica, California.
M2 won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
An album dedicated to the memory of crossover saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr., M2 blends jazz with R&B, pop-rock, and funk. The result is very much like Washington's own '80s and '90s releases. Bassist Miller employs a cornucopia of instruments on this release, from clarinets to distorted guitars, synthesizers to drum machines. Three of the compositions, "Boomerang," "It's Me Again," and "Your Amazing Grace" include inspired vocal performances by Chaka Khan and others.
Still, ...

Sheila E. has been one of music's top drummers and percussionists since her debut in Prince's band. Alongside her legendary father, Pete Escovedo, and as a solo performer, she continues to enjoy commercial as well as artistic success on such recordings as her year 2000 release on the Concord Vista label, titled Writes of Passage. This time around, the highly ...
| | Kirk Whalum Unconditional CD (2000) Bonus Track
Backbeat Acid Jazz Allstars, Vol. 1 songs
$10.39 "Playing With Fire" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
UNCONDITIONAL was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album. "There You'll Be" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
No doubt the title of Unconditional applies to the love of God that pervades his music and life, but like most of Whalum's efforts, this collection can be enjoyed by a wide audience. The centerpiece title song isn't blatantly gospel, but Whalum's textured multiple tenor lines rise powerfully towards the heavens like a soaring choir after making their main melodic hook statements. At one point, Whalum improvises crisply over Greg Phillinganes' ...

| | Chris Botti Night Sessions CD (2001)
Backbeat Acid Jazz Allstars, Vol. 1 CD music
$7.59 This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
At the precise moment when a corporate reshuffling and a reduced roster led to death knells in the press for Columbia Records' jazz division, Chris Botti was signing on after three albums at rival Verve, the jazz arm of Universal. Along with Bela Fleck, poached from Warner Bros., Botti seemed to represent the new lean-and-mean Columbia Jazz, an eclectic, contemporary artist with considerable crossover potential ...
