| | Carlos "Patato" Valdez Patato & Totico CD (1967) Remastered; Digipak
Guiro, Bongo & Maraccas
$9.89 Patato y Totico: Eugenio "Totico" Arango (vocals); Carlos "Patato" Valdes (congas, percussion). Additional personnel: Papaito, Virgilio Marti, Francisco Valdez, Hector Cadavieco, Mario Cadavieco, Juan Dreke, Tony Mayari (vocals); Arsenio Rodríguez (guitar); Israel "Cachao" Lopez (bass instrument). The landmark recording Patato & Totico belongs neither entirely to rhumberos nor to jazzers. The musical style will feel very familiar to those familiar with Cuba's rhumba tradition, which springs from the ritual songs of Yorubans and their descendants who found themselves sold into servitude to Cuba's sugar and tobacco plantations. The ensemble consists of tumbadora, tres golpes, quinto, shekere, clave, and voice, just as it would have a hundred years before in Havana basements or Matanzas slave quarters. The musicians, however, are no strangers to Manhattan jazz clubs, and that sensibility shines through. From the bass master Israel "Cachao" Lopez, who was a budding talent at the time, to the legendary Arsenio Rodriguez on tres, to Patato, who went on to become one of the most influential voices on his instrument, ...

Personnel: Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Wayne Shorter; Lee Morgan, Lee Morgan Quintet (trumpet); Reggie Workman (double bass); McCoy Tyner (piano); Elvin Jones (drums). Audio Remasterer: Rudy Van Gelder. Liner Note Authors: Nat Hentoff; Bob Blumenthal. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (04/29/1964). Photographer: Francis Wolff. Tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter's Blue Note debut found him well prepared to enter the big time. With an impressive quintet that includes trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Elvin Jones, Shorter performed a well-rounded program consisting of five of his originals (this CD reissue adds an alternate take of "Virgo") plus an adaptation of an "Oriental Folk Song." Whether it be the brooding title cut, the Coltranish ballad "Virgo" or the jams on "Black Nile" and "Charcoal Blues," this is a memorable set of high-quality and still fresh music. ~ Scott Yanow Shorter's Blue Note debut, NIGHT DREAMER, is a stunning statement from one of the premiere saxophonists and composers in the history of jazz. In 1964, after a long period as musical director for Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and newly joining Miles Davis' quintet, Shorter was primed to enter the field as a major solo artist. His guests include Lee Morgan (trumpet), renewing the outstanding frontline the two formed in Blakey's band, and McCoy Tyner (piano) and Elvin Jones (drums) from Coltrane's ...
