Weekend In Havana album
$14.39 Harlequin's exhaustively complete series on Brazilian-American dance bandleader Xavier Cugat has turned up countless rare recordings either waxed for broadcast purposes or recorded while being broadcast live over the radio. This installment compiles material dating from the years 1934-1937. It documents Cugat's efforts to assimilate himself and his orchestra into the North American dance band market while retaining a certain amount of authentic Latin American repertoire. This makes for an assortment of equatorial delights and lightweight U.S. pop tunes that sometimes sound more like George Hall or Richard Himber rather than Xavier Cugat, who was always at his best when purveying exotic instrumental mood music. Featured vocalists on this compilation are Carmen Castillo and Pedro Berrios. Highlights include the refreshing "Canto Karabali," the aromatic "Para Vigo Me Voy" and a magical piano interlude by Nilo Menendez that unfortunately only lasts a minute-and-a-half. This archival grab bag will at least temporarily satisfy any cravings you might have ...

| | Beatlejazz Another Bite Of The Apple CD (2001) Bonus Track; Japan
Weekend In Havana songs
$45.09 This D represents the second in a series of albums full of jazz covers of Beatles songs. Twelve tracks in all.
Japanese edition features the bonus track medley "Real Love/Free As a Bird".
With their follow-up to A Bite of the Apple, the trio of pianist David Kikoski, bassist Charles Fambrough, and drummer Brian Melvin continue to jazz up the Beatles' songbook in relatively impressive fashion with this 2001 release. Besides the familiar melodies and memorable themes, the artists effectively inject a distinct sense of swing amid impassioned soloing and an upbeat demeanor to the Beatles' historic legacy. Here, the musicians reharmonize many of the now-familiar motifs into forums for extended improvisations, a few funk grooves, peppery interplay, ...

| | Cowboy Copas Best Of The Best CD (2004)
Weekend In Havana CD music
$6.15 King Records' budget discs practically defy criticism because they aren't designed to please critics or collectors. They're often churned out with little attention to detail and crop up as impulse purchase items at truck stops and convenience stores. To its credit, the label has improved its offerings over the years, particularly with regard to sound quality. Best of the Best, despite its brevity, is a good summary of Cowboy Copas' chart hits that surpasses even the 26-track import anthology Copasetic on that point. The collection is a little unusual for a budget title in that it includes, among its few tracks, two versions of the song "Signed, Sealed and Delivered." Both recordings were major hits -- the first recording nearly topped the charts ...
