An excellent introduction to Roberto Firpo's influential tango style, 1920-44 surveys the vast range of the pianist's work, from his early acoustic orchestra recordings to his later quartet dates. Given the sheer breadth of Firpo's catalog, it's inevitable that the set misses more than a few essential recordings, but it's particularly effective in documenting his formative period, and the vintage sound of all these dates offers an evocative glimpse into a key era in the tango's evolution. ~ Raymond McKinney
this album covers the range of Firpo's tangos, from early acoustic orchestras to his post-1937 quartet

1920-1944 album
$13.69 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American Songbook, offering up elegant orchestral renditions of "I've Grown Accustomed to His ...
| | Jeff Hamilton Symbiosis CD (2009)
1920-1944 CD music
$12.59 Jeff Hamilton's recordings have always been focused as straight-ahead and mainstream as your typical superhighway, with occasional time for rest stops, gassing up, and sleepovers. While always a good listen, Hamilton and his non-stop rotation of up-and-coming pianists and bassists never really pushed the envelope, staying the course set by his mentor, the late, great bassist Ray Brown, and other California-based coolsters. With Symbiosis, though, there's a change in the weather with the addition of extraordinary young talent in pianist Tamir Hendelman and bassist Christoph Luty. This is not at all to say that Hamilton's music had no fire, guts, or glory, but the difference in internal energy heard on this recording is noticeable. ...

| | Miles Davis Tribute To Jack Johnson CD (1970) Remastered
1920-1944 album
$7.59 A TRIBUTE TO JACK JOHNSON was originally conceived as the soundtrack for a documentary on the life of the first African American heavyweight boxing champion, but the album stands on its own as one of the most brilliant, compelling fusion recordings ever made. This is due in large part to the increasing influence of rock and funk on Miles's aesthetic, to the superb musicians (including Davis himself-- who turns in some stunningly vigorous solos), and in part to the production skills of Teo Macero, who collaged the album together from numerous jam sessions into two lengthy, majestic tracks.

| | Spyro Gyra Road Scholars CD (1997)
1920-1944 CD music
$12.65 If you don't like Lite Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, Instrumental Pop, whatever you want to call it; stuff that wouldn't sound out of place in between David Sanborn and Kenny G on your local radio station, you probably shouldn't even be reading this far, because Spyro Gyra are avatars of the style. If their bag is your bag, however, you can feel comfortable diving right in to the sonic tapestry that is ROAD SCHOLARS. The band's synth-driven instrumental assault, led by keyboardist Tom Schuman, has remained consistent throughout their years of recording and touring together, and the formula here is very much in keeping ...

| | Ike Quebec Easy Living CD (1962) Japan
1920-1944 CD music
$32.39 The release history behind Ike Quebec's Easy Living session is pretty convoluted. Eight songs were recorded in all, five of them bluesy sextet jams and three of them ballad standards in Quebec's trademark romantic style. The LP was slated to feature three of the blues tunes and all of the ballads, but remained ...
