Marilyn Manson: Marilyn Manson (vocals, guitar, pan flute); Twiggy Ramirez (acoustic & electric guitars, bass); Zim Zum (guitar); M.W. Gacy (keyboards); Ginger Fish (drums, programming). Additional personnel includes: Trent Reznor (guitar, Fender Rhodes, Mellotron, programming); Dave "Rave" Ogilvie (programming). Producers include: Trent Reznor, Dave Ogilvie, M. Manson. Engineers include: Dave "Rave" Ogilvie. Boasting a fuller sound and a more focused sense of purpose, Antichrist Superstar is a substantial improvement on Marilyn Manson's debut album, Portrait of an American Family. The band draws equally from schlock metal, progressive metal, new wave, goth rock, and industrial rock, and with the help of producers Trent Reznor and Dave Ogilvie, the group creates a boiling, mockingly satanic mess of guitars, synthesizers, and ridiculously "scary" vocals. Though the sonic details make Antichrist Superstar an intriguing listen, it's not as extreme as it could have been -- in particular, the guitars are surprisingly anemic, sounding like buzzing vacuums instead of unwieldy chainsaws. Even with that considered, Antichrist Superstar is an unexpectedly cohesive album from a silly shock metal band and will stand as Marilyn Manson's definitive statement. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The latest volley in industrial music's invasion of the mainstream, shock-rock band Marilyn Manson revels in the perverse, the unpleasant and the grotesque, championing hate, alienation and negativity with the same fervor with which happy-face troubadours of the '70s promoted sunshine, peace and happiness. The band's music owes a great deal to labelmates Nine Inch Nails, incorporating processed vocals, screeching electronics and enough bad attitude to bring even Norman Vincent Peale down. But rather than follow Trent Reznor down the path of sonic experimentation, Marilyn Manson establishes an unrelenting, grungy, guitar-driven attack that makes Ministry and The Butthole Surfers sound "unplugged." ANTICHRIST SUPERSTAR is not an album for everyone. It is the aural equivalent of root canal without novocaine. Marilyn Manson creates a harsh, nightmarish soundscape to symbolize all that is evil and corrupt in contemporary society. There can be no such thing as a casual listen to ANTICHRIST SUPERSTAR's 16 scabrous tracks, and no listener will come away unscathed.Rolling Stone (5/13/99, p.64) - Included in Rolling Stone's "Essential Recordings of the 90's." Rolling Stone (11/28/96, pp.129-130) - 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...The group's third and most accessible album draws on the orgasmic din of death metal, the mechanized asault of hard-core industrial rock and swaggering FM-pop trash a la Def Leppard....an alluringly nasty piece of work..." Spin (12/96, p.140) - 8 (out of 10) - "...Its 16 songs rock like '70s Sabbath-style metal, but harder; the arrangements echo Queen in operatic scope but are more intense; the mood owes its vampiric chill to Bauhaus, but this band actually bites the vein..." Entertainment Weekly (10/11/96, p.90) - "...Manson's high-concept depravity has its own sick charm. Nihilism this goofy makes one long to be 15 again and naive enough to swallow such `satanic' hokum whole." - Rating: B Q (8/00, p.126) - Included in Q's "Best Metal Albums Of All Time" Q (7/01, p.88) - Included in Q's "50 Heaviest Albums of All Time". Q (12/99, p.170) - Included in Q Magazine's Best Gothic Albums Of All Time - "...a near-death meisterwork....Goth is to the point of seizure, its squealing riffs, Beelzebub vocals and monstrous sense of melodrama set new standards for saleable unpleasantness." blahblahblah i agree this is probably mansons deepest and most thought provoking album, but to say its his best puts limits on the man and the band...i mean come on has anyone listened to portrait or smells like children in while...if at all ...i listen to them both regularly(including ACS), all except the new stuff because he's kinda getting a little weak. Dont throw your spike collars at me yet...i have deep respect for the revrend..im just a little dissapointed is all. but anitchrist is prbably a 9/10 on my charts. best song is irresonsable hate anthem, angel withscabbed wings and 1996 Submitted by totalitarian (Colorado Springs) Was This Review Helpful? Antichrist Superstar
$8.85 '68 Comeback Special. Brian Setzer '68 Comeback Special: Brian Setzer (vocals, gutiar); Mark W. Winchester (upright bass); Bernie Dresel (drums). Additional personnel: The Brianaires (background vocals). Recorded at The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California. Brian Setzer has enjoyed a 20-year career as pop music's most consistent champion of rockabilly, first as the leader of the Stray Cats in the 80s, followed by solo stints, and a then by a resurgence in popularity in the late '90s fronting a swing orchestra. Setzer's latest incarnation is a return to a trio, named the Brian Setzer '68 Comeback Special. If the name represents homage to Elvis, the trio's disc, Ignition!, represents a return to purist rockabilly. Unlike the outings fronting his swing orchestra, there are no horns or swing standards on this disc. In fact, the absence of any covers is a departure for Setzer. Except for the traditional Spanish instrumental "Malagueña," Setzer writes all songs ...

| | Paul Metsa Texas In The Twilight CD (2005)
Antichrist Superstar
$13.39 Minnesota folksinger Paul Metsa made this archival recording on October 20, 1990, in a studio in Austin, TX. (Although it is described as a "live" recording, that does not connote a concert performance; the tracks simply were recorded "live in the studio," i.e., without overdubs.) He then seems to have taken the sole cassette made from the session home and forgotten about it until 14--years-later, when he was looking for something to release to mark his 25th anniversary as a performer. Loud House Records was sufficiently impressed by it to give him one of his few releases not issued solely by his own Raven Records label. And, in fact, it makes an excellent introduction to him, containing previously unheard, stripped-down versions of songs he has recorded before. This is just Metsa and his acoustic guitar (plus bongos and castanets here and there), and these are first takes; when he coughs at one point, he just keeps on going. Metsa has one of those singer/songwriter voices that manage ...
