Primus: Les Claypool (vocals, bass); Larry LaLonde (guitar); Brain (drums). Recorded between December 1996 and April 1997. Personnel: Les Claypool (vocals); Larry LaLonde (guitar); Brain , Brian "Brain" Mantia (drums). Recording information: Rancho Relaxo, CA (12/1996-04/1997). Unknown Contributor Roles: Larry LaLonde; Les Claypool; Brian "Brain" Mantia. The replacement of drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander with Brian "Brain" Mantia doesn't affect Primus' sound in any notable way on The Brown Album. That isn't surprising -- Les Claypool's side project Sausage sounds identical to Primus. What's notable about The Brown Album is how Claypool moves Primus even further into progressive and jazz-rock territory, concentrating entirely on the instrumental interplay of the group and caring very little for writing full-fledged songs. "Shake Hands With Beef," the first single from the album, has a reasonably amusing adolescent lyric, but the real attraction of the song is how its thunderous bass riff weaves in and out with the syncopated drums and avant guitar. In that sense, it does let the listener know what the album is about, and very few Primus fans should be disappointed by what The Brown Album delivers. It's standard Primus -- all instrumental interplay and adolescent humor -- but it's delivered with more finesse and skill than ever. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Primus' sixth full-length release solidifies the trio's direction as a funkabilly band driven by Les Claypool's slapping and flamenco (!) techniques on the six string bass. On the opening track, "The Return Of Sathington Willougby," Claypool addresses his listeners with a staggered voice and conspiracy-theory philosophy strongly reminiscent of William S. Burroughs, accompanied by Brain's militaristic drumming, Larry LaLonde's high octave guitar noise, and his own slap-happy bass. Claypool's lyrics are as quirky as ever, dealing with issues such as insane adolescents, confederate drunks, and Kalamazoo, Michigan. BROWN ALBUM was recorded solely in the analog format, giving Claypool's bass an even crunchier sound than on previous recordings. With Brain's drum fills and Larry LaLalonde's funk riffs, Primus' music has more body than ever before. Brown Album Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) BEST PRIMUS ALBUM EVER! Buy it. A Welcome Fluke. I think Les Claypool is an incredibly talented artist -- unfortunately, he sometimes makes bad decisions. My favorite Primus album is "Frizzle Fry," their first studio album. I also love their follow-up, "Sailing the Seas of Cheese." However, then came "Pork Soda" and I didn't understand what was going on.
Where once I could enjoy a Primus album back-to-front, I found weirdly non-commital sounding medeocrity. What's worse is that, in my opinion, "Tales from the Punch Bowl" was even worse!
And seeing other projects like Sausage and collaborations with Tom Waits come out, I was put to the possibility that Primus was a lost cause. It appeared to me that the 'Les Magic' was going other places -- leaving Primus to pump-out lack-luster, unispired sounding, crap.
Then "Brown Album" was released.
It was as though the two previous albums had never happened and that the fantastic creativety and visceral nature of Primus simply continued on! With "The Return of Sothington Willoughby" as the first trak, one must wonder, "was this return to the original vintage on-urpose?"
Needless to say, those who especially dread the thought of ever braving "AntiPop" or any of thier other aforementioned stinkers, "Brown Album" is a sigh of relief. Putting on for the first time I felt as though I was coming home.
P.S. For those of a like mind, and of the Frog Brigade albums are awesome. Let's hope Mr. Claypool keeps it up. Submitted by ozel (Minneapolis, MN, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Primus Sailing The Seas Of Cheese CD (1991)
Brown Album
$6.49 Primus: Les Claypool (vocals, bass); Larry "Ler" LaLonde (guitar); Tim "Herb" Alexander (drums). Additional personnel: Tom Waits (vocals); Mike Bordin, Butt House. The first Primus album to achieve much widespread airplay (thanks to its release on a major), and the one that broke them on MTV, Sailing the Seas of Cheese completely redefined the possibilities of the electric bass in rock music for those who'd never heard the group before. Slapping like a funk player, but strumming power chords and finger-tapping like a metal guitar hero, Les Claypool coaxed sounds from his instrument that had rarely if ever been made the focus of a rock band. Claypool's riffs were so full and dominant that they hardly needed to be doubled by guitarist Larry LaLonde (and wouldn't have had the same effect anyway), which freed him up on most songs to launch into dissonant, ...
| | Primus Pork Soda CD (1993)
Brown Album
$6.75 Primus: Les Claypool (vocals, mandolin, bass); Larry Lalonde (guitar, six-string banjo); Tim "Herb" Alexander (drums). Personnel: Les Claypool (vocals, mandolin); Larry LaLonde (guitar, banjo); Tim "Herb" Alexander (drums). Recording information: Ultrasound. Once audiences got a chance to hear Primus' instantly recognizable sound, driven by Les Claypool's bizarrely virtuosic bass riffs, their audience grew by leaps and bounds. It was enough to make their second major-label album, Pork Soda, one of the strangest records ever to debut in the Top Ten. Stylistically, it isn't much different from Sailing the Seas of Cheese, though the band does stretch out and jam more often. This can result in some overly repetitive sections, since Claypool's riffs are the basis for most of the compositions, but it also showcases the band's ...

Primus: Les Claypool (vocals, acoustic bass guitar, bass guitar); Larry LaLonde (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Tim "Herb" Alexander (drums).
