THE DIRTY BOOGIE was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album "Jump Jive An' Wail" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Sleepwalk" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
In his continuing evolution from pompadoured rockabilly revivalist to zoot-suited hipster, Brian Setzer keeps the faith with THE DIRTY BOOGIE, a collection that swings from stem to bow. Backed by hot horns and a bopping rhythm section, Setzer mixes well-arranged originals with well-known covers that show an aficionado's appreciation of jump blues, swing and doo-wop. Tunes by the Skyliners ("Since I Don't Have You"), Santo & Johnny ("Sleepwalk"), Bobby Darin ("As Long As I'm Singin'") and Bullmoose Jackson ("Nosey Joe") all enjoy the combination of Setzer's wide-ranging guitar playing and excellent charts played by his crack orchestra.
Elsewhere, Gwen Stefani is LaVerne Baker to Setzer's Jimmy Ricks in a playful reading of "You're The Boss." Clint Stacey's "This Old House" gives Setzer a chance to show off some fancy country finger-picking. The two numbers that will make you want to grab a flat foot floogie and cut a rug in your living room are a Neil Hefti-flavored re-arrangement of "Rock This Town" and a killer cover of Louis Prima's "Jump Jive An' Wail."

Setzer's take on jump music reflects not only the kick of his rockabilly roots but the expansiveness of '60s amd '70s rock..." - Rating: B+ Q (12/99, p.128) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...his 17-piece powerhouse finds him reviving suitable oldies or creating originals that simply sound as if they've jumped out of the past..." | | David CD (1968)
Dirty Boogie
$11.59 The sole album from six-man-and-a-woman Canadian band David is one of those wonderful, flawed surprises from the era, an overreaching blend of orchestral, soft pop with light psychedelic and soul touches that doesn't quite come together, but is full of exquisite music nonetheless. The intraband songwriting, the majority of it by Ted Grimes, is a mixed lot of varying caliber, but the finest songs -- and those make up at least half the album -- are truly stellar. The two Francis Webster contributions are highlights. "Never Been in Love" is a moody, psych-tinged folk-rock beauty, gorgeously produced and featuring stunning, ethereal harmonies that descend into quasi-medieval gothic chants and are goose pimple-inducing when they mix with the track's prominent trumpet. His "Cup of Tea" is a romantic, country-picked tin pan alley tune that sounds not unlike Paul McCartney's most sentimental, show tuney acoustic efforts. David never outright ...

| | Jaime Michaels Fool CD (2007)
Dirty Boogie
$9.85 "The lyrics stand alone as pure poetry..."Dirty Linen MagazineFOOLHARDYJaime Michaels may seem like the typical singer-songwriter, but with years of tours and performances across the country (and overseas) and five albums to his name, there is nothing usual about him. His new album, Fool, collects 14 sculpted stories that capture snapshots of places and remarkable moments from his life and cleverly disguise them as folk songs. Songs like “Always Never” mingle vaudevillian clinks and clanks with mandolin trills and organs that gently swoon. “Lavender Moon,” on the other hand, resembles a subtle bluegrass waltz with beautifully sung harmonies courtesy of singer-songwriter Suzanna Choffel. In fact, the album is peppered with guest appearances by local musicians like Jono Manson, who also produced the album, Chris Ishee on piano and Susan Hyde Holmes on upright bass. Michaels has much to celebrate with the release of Fool. The album is yet another notch on an ever-evolving career.Gabe Gomez - the ReporterBIOGRAPHYJaime sings. He always has. Always wanted to. Except maybe when he was in the fourth grade and Sister Mary Eymard used to traipse him and his two brothers around St. Mary's and force them to harmonize to Maguire Sisters tunes. Fortunately not too long after that he discovered what was going on up the road from the old Rhode Island homestead. And from the first act he ever saw at the Newport Folk Festival, a very young Tom Paxton, he knew what he wanted to do. That. And damned if that's not what he wound up doing. Well, more like this and that . . . a few years of sincere sixties singer songwriting in Cambridge trying to steal some of Tom Rush's tunings and Bonnie Raitt's rasp, opening shows for Dave van Ronk, Patrick Sky, Doc Watson, John Hammond and Jesse Colin Young . . . a couple of more solo years worshipping at the alter the Saints Tim, Buckley and Hardin . . . a fondly remembered stint as bass player/guitarist for the acoustic trio Beckett, touring and opening shows for Livingston Taylor, Jonathan Edwards and Earl Scruggs. Following time spent in Vermont teamed with guitarist Ron Renninger and saxophonist Leon Future ...
