"All Star" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
When Smash Mouth hit with the impossibly catchy "Walking on the Sun," many dismissed them as a one-hit wonder, but ASTRO LOUNGE finds the band bidding for a longevity that belies flash-in-the-pan accusations. Raspy, Richard Butler-ish vocals ride roughshod over carefully arranged but driving alt-rock. The fuzzed-out riff, syncopated beat, and '60s organ of "Diggin' Your Scene" are slightly reminiscent of the aforementioned monster hit, but that's just because those are some of the most significant weapons in the band's arsenal. '90s electronic touches, loops and samples brush up against those '60s influences with surprising success, and there's even a bit of late-'70s/early-'80s new wave thrown into the mix for good measure. It's all held together by inventive production and consistently solid, catchy songwriting.

Rolling Stone (6/24/99, p.67) - 3 out of 5 - "...Smash Mouth roll their big, goofy Cali jock pop into high gear....the boys borrow and bluff their way into a pleasant mix that's as inspired by the Cars as it is my the Beatles....ASTRO LOUNGE is easy listening in the truest sense." Pretty Good Smashmouth has a great group of songs on this album. Most have that retro feel, but maintain a new identity; really genius. Some songs are a little full of chunkiness. That is, guitar and drums get out of hand or repetative and don't really fit. The lyrics are okay, though they can sometimes try too hard to be deep. In the end, though, I could take away quite a few songs and wouldn't mind at all. Submitted by Code (Pennsylvania) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$18.19 Born in Haifa, Israel, weaned on jazz (thanks to his father, a boxing referee and jazz enthusiast, friend of Louis Armstrong), and raised in Tel Aviv, music called Misha from an early age. Yet, it wasn't until after his compulsory military service that he got his first piano and the opportunity to pursue music in earnest. After studying music with Israel's foremost composers-Paul Ben-Haim, Noam Sherrif and Isaac Sadai-as well as film and philosophy at Tel Aviv University, Misha apprenticed under 20th century master composer Dieter Schöhnbach in Germany; studied composition and conducting at the Guildhall School of music in London; then graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Starting out, Misha was especially influenced by jazz, Elton John and The Beatles. His interpretation and application of these and other western music influences to the Israeli cultural scene-as arranger, composer, songwriter, producer and recording artist-was vital in the redefinition of popular, theatre and film music, garnering numerous #1 hits. Furthermore, his classically-styled compositions were performed by the Israel Philharmonic and the Israel Chamber Ensemble. All this occurred over a very short 5 years, yet the impact ...
