Despite No Doubt's punk influences, they weren't included in the grunge boom of the early '90s. Much of the cause is due to the band's debut album, a work of polished production inspired more by '80s synths than No Doubt's heritage. Compared to Southern California's accepted ska/punk fusion, the album is overly pop-oriented, with new wave keyboards and punchy brass proving a foil to the basically ska framework. Gwen Stefani's extroverted vocals rescue the affair, however. ~ John Bush

No Doubt Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) A Keeper :) This album is insanely amazing. If you like ska then this is for you. It has the great feel of no doubt with the true feeling of ska they began to lose, but everything they make is truly great. GET THIS ! Submitted by Lindsey S/ (Baltimore Md) Was This Review Helpful? Searching for own style There are very few artists who coin their own unique style on their first release. No Doubt, I am afraid, is not one of the rare ones. I enjoy this CD, but it is a long way from the sound that would come together three years later on Tragic Kingdom. Gwen Stefani sings well and with plenty of enthusiasm, and the songs are mostly upbeat and catchy, but they don't grow too much upon repeated listening. Instead they just remind you of other Ska records, especially Selecter, Madness, and the English Beat. Horn charts are more prominent than on their more recent releases, while the guitar sound is back in the mix and never really stands out. "Trapped in a Box" was the single, while "Ache" and "Brand New Day" are my personal faves. "Paulina" is a teen boy fantasy along the lines of "Pictures of Lily" by The Who, only not quite as entertaining. Come to think of it, it is also thematically like "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" from Roxy Music and "Be My Girl" from the Police. Apparently inflatable mates are a recurring theme in songs from bands that later go on to be rich and famous. Submitted by Michael (Canal Winchester, OH, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

No Doubt album
$7.85 There's a long tradition in England of kiddie-pop bands who harmonize well, look good, sell syrup by the millions in the U.K. and can't get arrested in the U.S. The Spice Girls smash that mold by adding a point of view. Having more pop hooks than your average bait & tackle shop doesn't hurt either. The five Spice Girls met when they answered a would-be svengali's ad looking for young women who could sing and dance. He got more than he bargained for. They also had spunk, and one of their first acts was to fire him and take control of their own career.
The group co-wrote every song on SPICE, and it's an audacious debut on the order of Madonna's first LP. The girls' songs, like Madonna's, are simultaneously about wanting sex and wanting empowerment; their mantra is "girl power." These are new kids on the block who've actually been around the block a few times. Calling their debut single "Wannabe" is merely the most obvious nod to the queen of pop; they pay further homage in the brazen way they grab for any pop style within reach. Hip-hop, dancehall reggae, dance-club beats and soft balladry and all thrown into this spicy pop stew with utter abandon. Vocal lines are wantonly tossed back and forth among the five like unsuspecting suitors. If they can figure out a way to keep it up, watch out.
Additional personnel includes: Absolute (various instruments); Greg Lester (guitar); Jackie Drew (violin); Tony Ward (cello); Judd Lander (harmonica); Matt Rowe, Richard Stannard (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Dave Way, Pete Davis, Paul Waller, Statik (programming); Mary Pearce, Eric Gooden ...
| | No Doubt Beacon Street Collection CD (1995) Reissue
No Doubt CD music
$6.69 This Limited edition box set contains the LIVE IN THE TRAGIC KINGDOM video release with the BEACON STREET COLLECTION on CD, plus a poster and a sticker.
THE BEACON STREET COLLECTION is No Doubt's sophomore release. Its ten tracks are the perfect prologue to their breakthrough album TRAGIC KINGDOM. On this album, No Doubt's sound is an amalgam of rock, hard-core and their own quirky spin on ska. One of the virtues of Gwen Stefani's guttural voice is the fact that it works well with any style No Doubt decides to use.
A little more rocking than TRAGIC KINGDOM, THE BEACON STREET COLLECTION features a tasteful horn section and playful melodies that become instant sing-along hooks. No Doubt is now a household name. This reissue offers the opportunity to find out what made people want to bounce around to No Doubt's music before Stefani's bejeweled forehead became the totem of the skateboard generation.
Includes liner notes by No Doubt.
Engineers: Colin Mitchell, Ray Blair, Tom Dumont.
Personnel: Gwen Stefani, Bradley (vocals); Tom Dumont (guitar); Eric Carpenter (saxophone); Phil Jordan (trumpet); Gabrial McNair (trombone, percussion); Eric Stefani (keyboards); Adrian Young (drums, percussion).

No Doubt music CDs
$11.39 No Doubt was nominated for the 1997 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. TRAGIC KINGDOM was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Rock Album. "Don't Speak" was nominated for 1998 Grammys for Song Of The Year and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
No Doubt's members cite a strange variety of musical influences: Kiss, Prince and Madness, to name a few. And it's easy to imagine that their hometown itself, Anaheim, California (home to Disneyland), may have played a part in forming the band's schizophrenic, high-energy sound, which took TRAGIC KINGDOM, the band's second album, on a slow, steady ride up the pop charts. It finally hit No. 1 in December 1996, 14 months after it was released.
This is ska-punk-new wave-dance music, with instrumentation ranging from hardcore guitar to mellow, reggae-style horns. Singer Gwen Stefani's voice is by turns peppy, almost adolescent ("Spiderwebs") and emotionally wailing; she can sound a lot like Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano ("Just A Girl"). When Stefani sings, "I'm just a girl, little ol' me/Don't let me out of your sight," she does so without a hint of girlishness; her voice is all attitude, with a warbling edge of melodrama. For the most part, these are happy songs, though No Doubt do get philosophical on "Different People": "Once in a while I sit back/And think about the planet/Most of the time I trip on it/To kick back and think of how massive it all is/And how many others are on it."
Engineers include: Matt Hyde, Phil Kaffel, George Landress.

| | No Doubt Return Of Saturn CD (2000)
No Doubt songs
$10.55 RETURN OF SATURN was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
Pop-ska rockers No Doubt make their long-awaited return with the follow-up to the hugely successful TRAGIC KINGDOM. The band's fiery dynamic remains intact as vocalist Gwen Stefani's penchant for emotionally charged tales of heartbreak drive the single "Ex-Girlfriend," "Simple Kind Of Life" and "Bath Water." In "The Magic's In The Makeup," Stefani's lyrics speak of yearning to be appreciated beyond surface beauty for who she really is while the band reaches for a thicker sound and more complex arrangements.
Illusions and metaphors exploring the darker side of love set the tone of "Artificial Sweetener." "Marry Me" uses a melodic, staccato bass line to drive the reggae-tinged tale of the insecurities and doubts surrounding commitment. In "New" Stefani metaphorically compares fresh batteries to the optimism and excitement of a new relationship. "Too Late" is an atmospheric, bittersweet power ballad while "Staring Problem" throttles with the quirky punk energy that long-time fans will embrace. With two years in the making, RETURN OF SATURN finds No Doubt a tighter, more mature unit, focused more on pop songs and production and leaning slightly away from the ska/horn dominated sound of their past.
Recorded at Royaltone, NRG, Hang Suite and Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood, California; Aerowave, Encino, California.

No Doubt continues its platinum success with ROCK STEADY, led by the undeniably adorable Gwen Stefani. Besides being a wonderfully charismatic front woman, Gwen's cute quotient is so high you can't help but like this band. While the group's last release, RETURN OF SATURN was more introspective and had a slightly more pop-oriented approach, STEADY returns the group to their ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
No Doubt CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance on a finale of the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday." | | Ben Harper Will To Live CD (1997)
No Doubt music CDs
$9.35 Available with FIGHT FOR YOUR MIND and WELCOME TO THE CRUEL WORLD in THE BEN HARPER BOX SET.
More than just the testosterone Tracy Chapman, Ben Harper's WILL TO LIVE shows him to be an introspective songwriter whose musical horizons have broadened considerably on his third album. Having toured the prior two years with louder groups like Pearl Jam and PJ Harvey may have influenced Harper's decision to plug in. A wise choice, seeing as the material ranges from the moody ruminations of the title track (which brings to mind Chris Whitley's edgier work) to the juked-up delta blues of "Homeless Child." Elsewhere, Harper's muse runs to Curtis Mayfield vamps like "Mama's Trippin'," (complete with wah-wah guitar and wailing alto saxophone) to the sparse, spiritual vibe of "I Shall Not Walk Alone."
Personnel: Ben Harper (vocals, guitar, Weissenborn guitar, saz); Alan Anderson (guitar, nylon-string guitar); Patrick Brayer (fiddle, mandolin); Danielle Charles (violin); Brett Banducci (viola); Emily Wright (cello); Eric Person (saxophone); Louis Allen (acoustic bass); Juan Nelson (bass, background vocals); Dean Butterworth (drums); Rock Deadrick ...
| | Sloan 4 Nights At The Palais Royale CDs (1999)
No Doubt songs
$25.59 Sloan's live double-CD 4 NIGHTS AT THE PALAIS ROYALE handily dispels the myth that rock & roll died in the face of hip-hop and electronica in the late '90s. Not unlike Cheap Trick's LIVE AT BUDOKAN, the rabid fan response prods the band into delivering some top-notch performances. Early fare such as "People Of The Sky" and "Deeper Than Beauty" (both off of 1994's TWICE REMOVED), benefit from the kind of following that finds the crowd singing most of the songs without any vocal accompaniment from the band.
Pop references run amuck and range from the British Invasion sunshine of "The Lines You Amend" to irresistible AM-radio ear candy like "Keep On Thinkin" and "Everything You've Done Wrong." Of all the material drawn from the four Sloan albums released prior to 4 NIGHTS, 1998's NAVY BLUES provides the most highlights. Late-era Beatles ("Suppose They Close The Door"), the Raspberries at their sing-along finest ("Iggy & Angus") and Kiss circa DRESSED TO KILL ("Money City Maniacs") are all rock & roll touchstones taken from the greatly overlooked BLUES. ...
| | Fenix Tx Lechuza CD (2001) (Import)
No Doubt album
$14.45 Hong Kong import version features two bonus tracks, one of which is a video for "All My Fault."
On Fenix TX's second outing, the quartet continues to pursue the brash pop-punk sound that initially brought them widespread recognition. You've got to love a group that opens its album with a completely unironic song called "Pheobe Cates," an ode to the actress best known for her role in FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH. Like Green Day and many of the bands who sprang up in that groundbreaking trio's wake, Fenix TX mixes pop-schooled harmonies and melodies with a surefire guitar-and-drums attack whose lineage may be drawn from the Ramones through the Buzzcocks to the aforementioned Greenies without any degeneration of effect. Sure, they're very much of they're era; If LECHUZA came out in 1965, Fenix TX would probably be proponents of the British Invasion sound, and they'd be no less infectious and energetic than they are on this album.
Asian edition of the Houston-based pop-punk outfit's 2001 album features 13 tracks including 2 bonus tracks, 'Felix Navidad' & 'All My Fault' (Video). Concise songs with buzz saw guitars & anthemically sung lyrics about the frustration & alienated joys of youth. Universal.
LECHUZA contains ...
| | Pulp Hits CD (2003)
No Doubt CD music
$12.65 Recorded between 1992 & 2002. Includes liner notes by Harland Miller.
Although Pulp was formed in the 1980s, the Sheffield, England band didn't hit its real stride until the mid-'90s, when it became one of the preeminent acts of the Britpop boom. Although HITS is an unlikely title in a Stateside light, since Pulp never broke through commercially in America, the collection does compile the ensemble's finest singles from the '90s to the early 2000s, when the group disbanded.
Fronted by the cheeky, charismatic Jarvis Cocker, Pulp made its name with techno-tinged pop (the middle-class anthem "Common People" and the surging, Laura Branigan-pilfering "Disco 2000"), but also turned its sights on fierce glam-rock ("Party Hard") and elegant chamber-pop ("The Trees"). Expertly channeling quirky yet sophisticated rock crooners Bryan Ferry and Scott Walker (who produced Pulp's last album), Cocker imbued the sextet's guitar- and keyboard-driven songs with a droll, literate aesthetic that remains its legacy. Though Pulp might have been better served by a lengthier compilation (classics ...

| | Dave Shelton Fall CD (2006)
No Doubt songs
$9.35 Dave Shelton-MP3 PopDave Shelton is a singer / songwriter from Detroit area. He has been writing songs and recording since the late 80s. His influences range from Bryan Adams to Radiohead. Why do people want one thousand songs in a little box??… The age of one song done twelve ways is over! Dave Shelton is a songwriter with the influences of an MP3 player. One record, one performer, and the musical ride of your life!! Dave has been listening to many styles over his lifetime. “Fall” reflects the diversity of American and British pop music across many decades. In an age where the “LP” is on its way out here’s a record that can play from front to back, without the little box.Artist: Dave SheltonTitle: FallGenre: Rock-PopWebsite: http://www.broadjam.com/artists/artistindex.asp?artistID=30412Label: IndependentCD Baby Link: http://cdbaby.com/cd/daveshelton/from/muzikmanDave Shelton is a bit of throwback with a classic rock kind of sound to his songs. He plays all the instruments, guitar, bass, drums, and even provides the background vocals to compliment his strong lead. The great classic rock sound gets a huge boost from the keyboard playing of Mark Christopher. He does the Hammond B-3 justice and does a nice job of layering in a driving groove for Shelton to put all of his instrumentation and voice on. To top it all off, the mix and sound quality are above average. “Drive” is a rocker that reminded me of a good Lenny Kravitz tune, Shelton’s playing sounds like Kravitz and his vocals do as well. It has that non-stop energetic beat that never lets up and some killer lead guitar hooks that grab you right from the start. “Depression” is what it is lyrically; musically it is one of the meatier and layered tunes on the recording. There is a nice blend of vocals, instrumentation, and feeling throughout the track. All 11 tracks offer you some rock and pop with just a smidgen of the blues here and there to give it that much more depth and overall feeling. I like this guy Dave Shelton, he is multitalented-singing, and playing like this was his last shot to make it. Every artist should go into the recording studio that way, just a like an athlete that competes as if it was their last day on earth. You only have one opportunity to catch a listener’s ear; you may as well do it consistently throughout an album so the word spreads about your ...

$13.45 Fifth full-length release from West Philly-based solo artist Tara Burke aka Fursaxa. Boasting a fan base with the likes of Bardo Pond, Acid Mothers Temple and Thurston Moore who released a record by her on his Ecstatic Peace! imprint two years ago, Burke is now one of the epicenters and key collaborators of the North American Free-Folk movement, along with such luminaries as Jack Rose, Charalambides, Ben Chasny and the Jewelled Antler Collective. With her hypnotic, echo-y churchbell chanting, Burke possesses a power-filled vocal sound that harkens back not only to those other polar queens of disaffected freakout Psychedelia Nico and Barbara Manning, ...
| | Ellen Edson Sweetness Of You CD (2007)
No Doubt music CDs
$18.95 "The Sweetness of You" is a collection of traditional and original songs for children and their families. Ellen sings and plays banjo, guitar, dulcimer, mandolin and autoharp on the recording, and is backed with cello, flute and fiddle. The album envelops the listener in a loving spirit, perfect for comforting, settling, and soothing children and adults alike.A native of Los Angeles, Ellen grew up in a musical family with influences of classical, folk and film music. As a youngster, folk music became her passion, when her mom brought home recordings by Pete Seeger. Learning first the guitar, then the banjo, she became particularly enthralled with the traditional music of Appalachia. This led to learning both the autoharp and mountain dulcimer. Working with her father, the late film composer Jerry Goldsmith, Ellen played guitar and autoharp for his popular television theme for "The Waltons", and for the film score of "Wild Rovers". Following a move to rural New Hampshire, Ellen worked for luthier and guitar maker Michael Gurian before returning to school to complete her education as a teacher. Subsequently, she has blended her love of traditional folk music and ...
