Audio Mixer: David Tickle. Recording information: Groove Masters, Santa Monica, CA. San Francisco's 4 Non Blondes burst onto the national scene with their massive, neo-hippie anthem "What's Up" from their debut Bigger, Better, Faster, More? Although they failed to recreate the single's success, the album, as a whole, is a fairly engaging mix of alternative rock, quasi-funk, and blues. The focal point is on lead singer Linda Perry who also plays guitar and was the primary writer of the material. Perry has a powerful set of pipes akin to Johnette Napolitano, but, unfortunately, she tends to cut loose when a little more restraint would benefit the proceedings. However, "Superfly" is a feel good, funky number and "Spaceman"'s yearning lyrics are delivered over a quiet, martial drum rhythm. A solid debut that got lost in the wake of its mammoth hit. ~ Tom DemalonEntertainment Weekly (5/7/93, p.58) - "...Imagine a distaff Spin Doctors with more ooomph...[a] musical grab bag...stuffed with jet-propelled folk rock, angst-ridden anthems, high-octane blues, and '90s protest songs..." - Rating: A- Q (7/93, p.88) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...tracks like `What's Up' and `Spaceman' sound like suspiciously timeless classics...diversity of material diffuses the impact of the record to a degree, but [the album] is nevertheless an auspicious introduction..." Very cool Linda and co. Linda Perry came, KO'd everyone with her powerful voice and left us all wanting more!! This band really gave rock that gush that it needed...songs like "Superfly", "Mr. President", etc. are like punches to the stomach both for the lyrics and arrangements. I know of few bands that picked up where 4 Non Blondes left off...it is sure a pity!!
Linda where are you now......
For those of you whoa re interested, there is also a bootleg called "Live in Italy" which is very cool too!! Submitted by dragster (Sydney, NSW, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Good cd I have always been a fan of the song "whats up". I remember when it came out in 1992 I was about 17 years old. Seems like people liked to make fun of it, but I think it is a good song with good lyrics. Also, this chick can really sing. I like that scratchy voice in a woman singer(I think it's sexy). If this cd is a man bashing cd, it doesn't bother me. I like artist that can express themselves through their lyrics and not sound cheesy. My stepmother really liked the song whats up. My dad and her got a divorse about 10 years ago and she moved to another city. I haven't seen her since. Everytime I hear that song I think of her and hope she's doing alright.
