With her follow-up to her commercially successful debut album, Mya has taken a small step towards shedding her squeaky-clean image and embracing a more mature sound. Many of the best moments on Fear of Flying come with the help of other artists such as Jadakiss of the Lox and Left-Eye from TLC. With producer Swizz Beatz behind the soundboard for her and rapper Jadakiss making his presence felt on "Best of Me," the single is the album's highlight. "Takin' Me Over" featuring Left-Eye shows that when pushed Mya can hold her weight among R&B heavyweights. Without the energy of collaborators in the mix, many of her solo tracks wander into predictability. The album relies too heavily on tepid ballads such as the title track and "Man of My Life." Yet songs like "Can't Believe," "For the First Time," and "Lie Detector" show an emotional depth that lacked in her debut. Mya's sophomore effort proves that she is a promising young talent, but still has yet to develop the chops necessary to rank among the best of R&B divas. ~ Jon Azpiri
In late 2000, pop songbird Mya's second album, Fear of Flying, was re-released with two different tracks, "Free" and "Again & Again." The tracks which were replaced were "For the First Time" and "No Tears on My Pillow." The final result is a much improved album. The two discarded songs were forgettable, tepid ballads, thankfully replaced with infinitely superior up-tempo numbers. Upon initial release, the album seemed to be suffering from the dreaded sophomore slump. The first single, "The Best of Me," arguably the best song on the album and one of the better pop songs of 2000, under-performed on the charts, not even making it into the pop Top 40. The follow-up, "Case of the Ex," proved to be a different matter. The label intelligently issued a commercial single for the song, which helped propel it to number two, and in turn solidified the album as a hit. As that song was riding high on the charts, the album was reissued with the different tracks. While the first version of the album was heavily weighted with tepid ballads, the second version is much livelier, and, in essence, much better. "Free" is a Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis composition, in a similar vein to Control-era Janet Jackson, and the album's third single, "Again & Again," is a rock-tinged song, adding much needed muscle to the album. The song order was changed, to much better results, because the ballads were saved for the first version's bitter end, leaving the listener lost and bored. So consumers and Mya fans beware -- to avoid unnecessary disappointment be sure to buy the second version of Fear of Flying. ~ Jose F. Promis

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Fear Of Flying CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' ...
| | Mya Moodring CD (2003)
Fear Of Flying music CDs
$10.59 Young R&B siren Mya's voice first caught national attention with her song-stealing chorus on Pras's everpresent 1998 hit "Ghetto Superstar" from the movie "Bulworth." After that, it seemed the youthful singer with the dulcet, yet surprisingly acrobatic voice seemed to be everywhere; providing the hook for the theme to "The Rugrats Movie," teaming with Christina Aguilera, Lil' ...
| | Ciara Goodies CD (2004)
Fear Of Flying songs
$8.49 As a rare female voice in the world of crunk, Ciara is in the unique position to offer a counterpoint to the multitude of hits like Lil Jon's "Get Low" and Petey Pablo's "Freek-a-Leek," which feature men going into clubs and calling out any attractive female. On Ciara's breakout single, "Goodies," the singer coos sultrily--but forcefully--about her independence and how she refuses to be treated like an object, even enlisting the aforementioned Lil Jon and Pablo help out, producing and guest rapping, respectively. It's no wonder "Goodies" was a 2004 summer smash, with its singularly disarming combination of an empowering message backed by an intoxicatingly sexy beat.
Ciara's debut record takes its name and direction from the aforementioned hit, backing up her outstanding single with a slew of aggressive, seductive dance-floor hits cut by sweet ...
| | Usher Confessions: Special Edition CD (2004) Special Edition
Fear Of Flying album
$9.59 Usher has been a symbol of tender sexuality ever since he shifted from teenage sensation to soulful superstar. He's breathtakingly good at what he does; possessing that undefinable essence known to a select few soul crooners (Al Green, D'Angelo, etc.) who radiate sensuality through song, Usher has reached an apex on the sultry CONFESSIONS, his fifth studio album.
After the obligatory intro, Lil Jon kicks in with his exhortations on the catchy, dance-floor-ready single "Yeah." Usher follows that up with the sublimely sweet "Throwback," a torch song with a fantastic Motown hook. On "Confessions Part II," he exposes his most vulnerable side when admitting to his lover that he's fathered a child with ...
