Yes, this time consisting of Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman, and Alan White, got together for three nights in March of 1996 in San Luis Obispo, CA, to cut Keys to Ascension, the group's fourth live album in 28 years, which is rounded out with two new studio creations. Four of the seven live tracks are covers of songs that the band originally recorded between 1970 and 1974. The group has aged well, and Keys to Ascension is a more satisfying album than 1980's Yesshows. "Siberian Khatru" has less intensity but more lyricism than it did 23 years ago, making it slightly less dramatic -- the ending lacks some necessary attack, replacing it instead with more articulate guitar. Tales From Topographic Oceans is represented by "The Revealing Science of God," which shows off some superb ensemble playing on a 20-minute piece that is most difficult to bring off on-stage, with Wakeman the standout among the instrumentalists. Anderson's falsetto has lowered slightly with age, and lost a bit of its power in the process as well, but the ensemble carries the piece successfully to its conclusion. Nearly as surprising is the presence of Paul Simon's "America," a song they cut back in the early '70s, which comes off as a lot more engaging here than it did back when. "Onward" and "Awaken," from the late '70s, are well represented in beautiful live covers. The new songs featured as studio recordings on the second disc are superior to anything on the more recent Union "mega-Yes" album, with soaring harmonies and very spacious song construction. ~ Bruce Eder Returning to one of its classic line-ups, Yes recorded a stunning performance in 1996 in San Luis Obispo, California for ecstatic fans who awaited the band's reunion. The two-disc performance set, KEYS TO ASCENSION, finds the band in sharper-than-ever form with masterful performances of classic hits like "Roundabout," "Siberian Khatru," "Starship Trooper," and a version of Paul Simon's "America." Also included are two new studio tracks in the classic Yes vein, "Be the One" and "That, That Is." What's more, the sonic clarity of this album is breathtaking, ensuring a dazzling experience for even the casual Yes fan. This most-favored incarnation of the art rock supergroup also released a second two-disc volume of cuts from this event, KEYS TO ASCENSION II. | Keys To Ascension Music Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) Too sluggish! The live songs on this, and part 2, are too quiet! Just compare this with "House Of Yes", and you'll see what I mean! The studio songs are much better, but you can get those separately on "Keystudio", a compilation of all the studio tracks from both "Keys..." releases. Yes, Another live YES album.... When this came out, I couldn't help but shrug my shoulders at yet another live YES compilations. Upon purchasing the album, I realized that KTAI and KTAII are essentially an album full of new music + classic recorded live tracks with a dream line-up. Definitely worth the money. Keys to Ascension - Music of the Universe Keys to Ascension, a recording of Yes's concert in SLO, is without a doubt, the pinnacle of this band's acheivment in the 20th century. I have never before heard such motivating music as I hear in this, from the frantic "Roundabout" to the extended social commentary "That, That is", and from the melodic love ballad "Onward" to "The Revealing Science of God", a rock symphony, not to mention the galactic jam thriller "Starship Trooper". Many bands lose their touch in thirty years, but Keys to Ascension is living proof that Yes is not one of them. Submitted by a reviewer (Haines, AK) Was This Review Helpful? Keys To Ascension
$14.49 Photographer: Ben Watts. Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares to jump, and then gives you a knowing wink that says, not quite yet -- there's more fun to be had. And what fun it is with Bublé swinging through "All of Me," and killin' Van Morrison's classic "Crazy Love" with a light and yearning touch. And just as "Home" worked to showcase Bublé's own writing abilities, here we get the sunshine pop of "Haven't Met You Yet" ...

| | North Mississippi Allstars Do It Like We Used To Do CDs (2009) With DVD; Digipak
Keys To Ascension
$13.35 This live album spans the entire career of the North Mississippi Allstars to date, from 1996 to 2008. Guitar star Luther Dickinson and his drumming brother Cody (sons of famed producer/keyboardist Jim Dickinson), together with bass buddy Chris Chew, redefine the concept of blues rock over the course of these two discs, rescuing it from the lazy, third-hand vibe of so many '70s bands, and investing it with the deep feeling and trenchant attack they learned from both the elder Dickinson and North Mississippi blues king R.L. Burnside himself. They tear up the house on songs associated with everyone from Burnside to Muddy Waters here, not to mention their original tunes. Although they may mix elements of hip-hop, metal, and alternative rock into their repertoire, the North Mississippi Allstars are really a power blues trio whose members lean heavily on the kind of Mississippi folk-blues numbers they learned firsthand from the likes of R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, and Othar Turner, an approach that has given the NMA a solid grounding in local blues history as well as a solid sense of place, and by understanding and embracing the local North Mississippi modal drone approach, the Allstars have inherited a perfect springboard into a loose, ragged, but powerfully tight sound that somehow manages to seem both reverently traditional and completely contemporary at the same time. This set chronologically collects live highlights of the band's first ten years together over the course of two discs and adds a third DVD disc that documents the band's history. It's powerful stuff, rocking like Mississippi thunder and then turning as delicate as Mississippi rain at times, and in many ways, this might be the best release from the band yet, particularly since it captures the NMA in their natural habitat -- live and on fire. Highlights abound, including a wonderful version of Mississippi Fred McDowell's "I'm in Jail," a stark take on the NMA original "Sugartown," and an eye-opening stomp through J.B. ...
