Recorded live at Harpos Theatre, Detroit, Michigan on November 22, 1996.
The live record is a common gambit for hard rock bands, especially those past their commercial peak and recording for a new label. It's an easy way to get royalties for old songs and an easy way to get fans to buy a new record. It's also a sign of creative bankruptcy, but that doesn't matter if the record is good, which is the case with Warrant's Warrant Live 1986-1997. The title is misleading. The album is not a collection of live performances -- it is a Detroit concert from 1997, where the group played its greatest hits. Warrant were at the top of their game, sounding harder and more ferocious than they did in the studio. That doesn't prevent some of these songs from being absolute dogs, but at least the band sounds impassioned about the material, which makes Warrant Live 1986-1997 a must-have for most of the group's hardcore fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Let us all be thankful that Ozzy's retirement didn't stick. It supposedly lasted for three days, after which he got bored and started working on this project. Heavy, riff-intensive tunes, progressive song structures and a little psychedelia give OZZMOSIS a definite Sabbath flavor. Ozzy must have been in touch with whatever inspired early classics like PARANOID and MASTERS OF REALITY. Witness the extremely chunky "Thunder Underground," which can stand up next to "Sweet Leaf" and "Symptom Of The Universe" as an archetype of hard rock. The trippy guitar in "Ghost Behind My Eyes" and "Denial" are not some young Ozzy-wannabe going for a retro sound--this man was there, "Planet Caravan"ing.
Still, this heavy metal daddy in touch with his roots is also hip to the genre's latest sound. OZZMOSIS has a live, up-front feeling, thanks to producer Michael ...

To combat the sales backlash that began when Derrick Green took singer/guitarist Max Cavalera's spot in the group, Roadrunner Records released the live document Under a Pale Grey Sky. Recorded in the very short period between the death of his stepson and his exit from the group, Cavalera's performance is nothing short of breathtaking. His venomous roar has rarely sounded this raw and heartfelt, he screams with a fury that comes deep from within, and he delivers a performance that pulls the listener uncomfortably close. Guitarist Andreas Kisser is also in fine form, offering an eerie, melodic counterpoint to Cavalera's pounding riffs. One only needs to look to "Endangered Species" to see why the two guitarists were a masterful pairing, with Kisser pasting blistering and shrill leads over Cavalera's abrasive chug in a tense battle of aggression. The track selection may leave a little to be desired; while they take most of the songs from Chaos A.D. and Roots, they barely cover their catalog before that point. What is here is awesome, but it would have been nice to hear "Inquisition Symphony" or "Under Seige" as performed by the group (arguably) at its peak. Toward the end of the performance, ...

Known as a one-hit wonder for her 1962 girl group-styled classic "Party Lights," Claudine Clark recorded an entire LP and various other singles, a couple under pseudonyms. This 24-track CD has most of what she cut prior to 1970, including some songs from the LP, various non-LP 45s (among them one-offs under the pseudonyms Joy Dawn and Sherry Pye), and a previously unissued longer alternate take of "Party Lights." Because Clark had more obvious talent than the usual one-hit wonder -- she wrote much of her own material, and had a degree in music composition -- you might approach such a collection in hopes that it contains a bunch of unfairly overlooked quality sides. The perhaps disappointing reality is, however, that like many a one-hit wonder, her big smash is much better and more memorable than anything else she cut. There are a bunch of slight knockoffs of the "party" theme from her LP; some too-obvious Supremes/Motown girl group imitations; some run-of-the-mill girl group and doo wop (including her obscure 1958 single "Angel of Happiness"/"Teenage Blues"); a little previously unissued material; and the strangely titled "Party Lights" follow-up, ...
