(1 Customer Review)
Warrant's comeback album Ultraphobic was simply released at the wrong time. By 1995, the audience for the band's good-time, party-all-night pop-metal had evaporated, deserting them for the harder-edged sounds of grunge and alternative. Warrant try to sound harder on Ultraphobic, but all the grungy guitars sound forced. However, when the band sticks to their trademark metal, they turn in songs that are as good as anything they had ever done. But by the time the record was released, no one was listening anymore. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Q (5/95, p.117) - 3 Stars - Good - "...it's back to basics....They write fine tunes in parts, they are newly bitter and resentful of lyric (somebody has obviously lost pots of money along the way) and nobody would notice if they hadn't bothered to re-form..." | | Ozzy Osbourne Ozzmosis CD (1995) Remastered
Ultraphobic CD music
$7.59 Let us all be thankful that Ozzy's retirement didn't stick. It supposedly lasted for three days, after which he got bored and started working on this project. Heavy, riff-intensive tunes, progressive song structures and a little psychedelia give OZZMOSIS a definite Sabbath flavor. Ozzy must have been in touch with whatever inspired early classics like PARANOID and MASTERS OF REALITY. Witness the extremely chunky "Thunder Underground," which can stand up next to "Sweet Leaf" and "Symptom Of The Universe" as an archetype of hard rock. The trippy guitar in "Ghost Behind My Eyes" and "Denial" are not some young Ozzy-wannabe going for a retro sound--this man was there, "Planet Caravan"ing.
Still, this heavy metal daddy in touch with his roots is also hip to the genre's latest sound. OZZMOSIS has a live, up-front feeling, thanks to producer Michael Beinhorn (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden). Zakk Wylde's huge, raw guitar also plays a major role. He provides scorching solos, lush textures and juicy fills with a muscular tone and minimal effects--the perfect complements to ...

| | Mr Big Greatest Hits CD (2004)
Ultraphobic songs
$6.09 Since Mr. Big had their big hit with the campfire singalong "To Be With You," it's easy for the average listener to assume that Mr. Big is one of the poppiest of the pop-metal bands, when precisely the opposite is the case. Mr. Big was formed by two virtuosos, shred kings Paul Gilbert (formerly the guitarist for Racer X) and Billy Sheehan, who came to prominence as the bassist for David Lee Roth's solo band, and the band was designed as a way for both to flash their chops. At least at first, songs were a secondary consideration, a vehicle for the two to play. Tunes were gradually introduced to the band, taking hold on their second album, but remnants of the instrumentalists-first mentality persisted, even after Gilbert flew the coop at the end of the '90s, since he was replaced with fellow guitar virtuoso Richie Kotzen, who briefly filled C.C. Deville's shoes in Poison. Both eras are accurately represented on Rhino's 2004 collection Greatest Hits, which contains all the hits, all the songs that were transcribed in guitar magazines, and a few rarities to boot. Those expecting a bunch of "To Be With You"s or even pop-metal in the vein of Poison will find this a bit disappointing, since this isn't very hooky and on the harder side of pop-metal, giving Gilbert ...

| | Woodbox Gang Wormwood CD (2002)
Ultraphobic CD music
$18.99 Wormwood was released in January 2002. At that time, the Woodbox Gang was a 3 piece group consisting of Hugh DeNeal (vocals & acoustic guitar), Brian DeNeal (Bass & Crowbar), and Alex Kirt (vocals & multi-instrumentalist). Wormwood also featured guest musicians such as Randy Crouch (fiddle), Julie Sommers (harmony vocals), and Brad Bolin (Dobro, lap steel). Wormwood is the topically and musicially the darkest, most haunting album that the Woodbox Gang has released. Wormwood contains perhaps their most creative and diverse use of instrumentation. They used gas cans, crowbars, iron pipes, kazoos, washboards, a snow shovel, hammond organ, acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, jews harp, an ashtray, 2x4's, jug, and drums to create the spooky tones on Wormwood. This album was voted "Best Album of 2002" by Carbondale's Nightlife Magazine. Coincidentally, the Woodbox Gang was voted "Best Local Band" that same year. Wormwood is a glimpse of the Woodbox Gang at the time when they finally perfected their own original style, a style to which they have remained true in the years since 2002. Biography: From the village of Makanda in extreme southern Illinois, in a little hollow called Vulture Valley, comes a "caustic acoustic cacophony" known as the Woodbox Gang. They have skillfully combined the American roots music styles of bluegrass, delta blues, folk, and traditional country with the aggressive delivery of punk rock to create their own style of music to which they have given the name "Trashcan Americana". The band is very interested in experimenting with the combined sounds of various conventional and non-conventional instrumentation to create sonic landscapes specifically tailored to the mood and theme of each composition. Hugh DeNeal, their chief lyricist, uses his poetic talents to craft twisted tales of a dark, yet often humorous nature. The Woodbox Gang specializes in "story telling" songs. The group has shared the stage with artists such as Hank Williams III, the John Cowan Band, & many others. Alternative country icon Jason Ringenberg (Jason and the Scorchers) has been quoted in several interviews citing the Woodbox Gang as one of his favorite new ...
