Lynyrd Skynyrd: Johnny Van Zant (vocals); Rickey Medlocke, Hughie Thomasson (guitar, background vocals); Gary Rossington (guitar); Billy Powell, Bill Cuomo (keyboards); Leon Wilkeson (bass, background vocals); Owen Hale (drums, percussion); Kenny Arnoff (drums); Michael Cartellone (percussion); Carol Chase, Dale Krantz Rossington, Chris Eddy (background vocals). Additional personnel: Josh Leo (acoustic guitar). Producers: Josh Leo, Ben Fowler, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ron Nevison. Most Lynyrd Skynyrd fans would agree that the band reached its creative peak in the 1970s, but that doesn't mean that Skynyrd's 1990s work is without merit. While it's true that the Southern rockers provided their most essential recordings in the 1970s, Skynyrd's 1990s lineups definitely had their moments in the studio, and their live shows continued to please die-hard fans. Released in 2000, Then and Now is an enjoyable, if imperfect, collection of live and studio tracks that draws on Skynyrd's three CMC International releases of the late '90s: Lyve From Steeltown, Edge of Forever, and Twenty. Inspired performances of 1970s favorites like "Sweet Home Alabama," "Free Bird," and "That Smell" (all of which were recorded at a show in Burgettstown, PA, near Pittsburgh on July 15, 1997) demonstrate that in the 1990s, lead singer Johnny Van Zant had no problem handling gems his late brother Ronnie Van Zant once belted out. And the studio tracks (which include "Preacher Man," "Tomorrow's Goodbye," and the swamp blues-influenced "Voodoo Lake") point to the fact that while 1999's Edge of Forever and 1997's Twenty aren't in a class with Gimme Back My Bullets, Second Helping, or Street Survivors, they're decent more often than not. Casual listeners would be better off starting out with a collection of Skynyrd's 1970s classics, but for hardcore fans, Then and Now isn't a bad CD to have in your collection. ~ Alex Henderson THEN AND NOW appropriately touches on "then," as some of the songs here are Lynyrd Skynyrd staples from the 1970s, and "now," as they're performed here by the late-'90s touring edition of the band, featuring original members Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, and Leon Wilkeson (guitar, keyboards, and bass, respectively). The album, a compilation derived from three earlier efforts, splits the difference between studio and live performances. Of the former, the most surprising track is "Tomorrow's Goodbye," a quite beautiful power ballad (complete with strings) about saving the environment. The live tracks are also impressive--Johnny Van Zant doesn't quite have his late brother Ronnie's unique mix of swagger and grace, but on crowd-pleasers like "Free Bird" and "Sweet Home Alabama" he gets pretty damn close. Then And Now
$14.29 Liner Note Author: Michael Patrick King. Photographer: Greg Allen. The soundtrack to the 2008 big-screen arrival of HBO's SEX AND THE CITY features a fittingly glamorous set of pop songs to accompany the urban adventures of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda. Reflecting the movie's fashionable New York City setting, this collection includes Fergie's sleek "Labels or Love," which plays on one of the dramedy's central themes, and the soulful, clothes-conscious "All Dressed in Love," a tune belted out by SEX co-star Jennifer Hudson. Other highlights of this proudly cosmopolitan compilation include Morningwood's rocked-out "New York Girls" and Al Green's stirring "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," performed with young R&B acolyte Joss Stone. Big-budget films call for big-budget soundtracks, so the silver screen 2008 debut of Sex and the City gets a much splashier treatment than the 2004 soundtrack to the television series. That 2004 set struck a balance between New York cabaret and club, with just a hint of feminist pop in Aimee Mann and Imani Coppola. The 2008 Sex and the City is decidedly splashier, cutting out Bette Midler and replacing her with a heaping dose of hipsters of all kinds, ranging from wannabe indie rockers Morningwood to the inescapable bling soul-pop of Fergie, whose grotesque "Labels or Love" perverts both the S&TC themes, musical and meaning. Some might say that the film itself perverts the show but whether it does or not, it's not an issue with the soundtrack, which is kind of its own entity, as much as a movie tie-in can be. It would be a mixed bag regardless of whether or not the movie was any good, as it mixes a new cut from the movie's co-star Jennifer Hudson ("All Dressed in Love," her first big tune since Dreamgirls) and a track from neo-folkies the Weepies with India.Arie singing Don Henley, a dorky Nina Simone remix, and two Bee Gees covers -- the Bird and ...
