The second installment of the Hard to Find 45's series is, like the first, a wide assortment of Top 40 hits, some of them indeed very hard to find on CD or even hear on the radio. Some of them are not really that hard to find on CD, though this disc (like every one in this series) takes pains to present original 45 RPM single versions, often in stereo. A fine straightahead arranger-composer, Canadian Phil Nimmons has long had an underground reputation in the U.S., based on his memorable "Atlantic Suite" of 1975. This two-CD set from 1997 reissues that five-part work and the 17-minute "Suite P.E.I.," which was part of an obscure Candian sampler LP, and adds a full CD of previously unreleased material. The "Suite P.E.I.," a showcase for Nimmons' clarinet, utilizes a nonet, while the other pieces are played by big bands filled with notable Canadian jazzmen. Although Nina Simone's years at RCA have their passionate devotees, most fans believe her mid-'60s tenure at Philips was the pinnacle of her career. Indeed, her first album for the label, 1964's still-startling NINA SIMONE IN CONCERT, is probably Simone's single finest album of all time, introducing such masterpieces as her chilling reinterpretation of Kurt Weill's "Pirate Jenny" and the anti-segregation broadside "Mississippi Goddam," which she delivers with absolutely brutal humor.
