The Kry's strength is in their melodies. Their lyrics tend to be a little weak, and this album is no exception. By the end even the melodies start to sound a bit repetitive, but it's still worth a listen. Despite its occasional weaknesses, this album has some of The Kry's strongest lyrical work and a freshness to it lacking in later releases. They look for creative ways to express their passion -- God -- and it really shows on this release. High points on the album include the peppy, fun "I Can't Stop Thinking About You," the eerie, resonant track "Jesus Is Coming Soon," and "Take My Hand," an encouraging, sweet, strong number. This album is The Kry at their best -- both straightforward in their message and creative in their songwriting. ~ Melinda Hill

Purchase You CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Third Day CD (1996)
You album
$11.45 Third Day's debut album is a great introduction to this Southern Christian rock band, led by lead singer/guitarist Mac Powell. The band's style can be summarized as Hootie & the Blowfish meets Lynyrd Skynyrd meets Pearl Jam. The first album emphasizes the straight-ahead classic rock sound. It produced songs that would become Third Day concert fixtures -- like the dramatic "Thief," told from the point of view of one of the other criminals who were crucified with Jesus, the anthemic "Consuming Fire," and the sentimental "Love Song." Other good album tracks include the ballad "Take My Life," "Nothing at All," and the condemning "Did You Mean It?" This album easily has crossover appeal for people who don't normally listen to Christian rock. The band's musicianship and originality shines through. This album probably remains Third Day's purest, most focused work. 1997's Conspiracy No. 5 would bring in a more alternative grunge sound. The band has never been more accessible as right here. ~ Steven Jacobetz

| | Jars Of Clay Much Afraid CD (1997)
You CD music
$11.49 MUCH AFRAID is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files.
Additional personnel includes: Kate St. John (English Horn); Greg Wells (bass, drums, percussion); Neil Conti (drums).
MUCH AFRAID won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album.
The follow-up to Jars of Clay's almost minimalist first album features a bigger sound, with a wider lyrical scope and a more solid, grownup production (by Steve Lipson, of Sting and Annie Lennox fame). These new developments give MUCH AFRAID a real sense of staying power. The Christian alternative rock group appears to have broken out of the often-narrow confines of the genre. There's a hint of psychedelia on "Overjoyed," some Bee Gees-style harmonizing on "Tea and Sympathy," and lush, '70s rock-esque arrangements throughout. Spirituality plays a more subtle role on MUCH AFRAID, but continues to be a vital theme. On songs like "Overjoyed" it is sometimes difficult to separate the personal from the divine. And that's probably just the way the band wants it.

$29.49 Set in Sweden, Andrei Tarkovsky's last film follows the travails of wealthy patriarch Alexander (Erland Josephson), a former actor and critic who lives in a remote home on the edge of the Baltic Sea. One year on his birthday, a sudden television announcement interrupts the celebration with news of a nuclear holocaust. His family and guests suffer through violent fits of hysteria and emotional turmoil in the ensuing days, but the previously troubled Alexander finds a clearness of mind when he makes a pact with God--offering himself as a sacrifice in order to redeem the fallen earth for his cherished son. Supremely poetic, THE SACRIFICE is filled with achingly beautiful images, expertly shot by Ingmar ...
| | Ricky Martin Vuelve CD (1998)
You music CDs
$9.59 VUELVE won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance.
So he did time in Menudo, so what? He was young and impressionable. You don't hold New Edition against Bobby Brown, do you? The point is that Ricky Martin is a fully-realized, mature artist who has a lot to offer to the world of Latin music. VUELVE shows the range of Martin's talents, from the propulsive Latin rhythms of "Por Arriba, Por Abajo" and "Lola, Lola" to the Anglicized power balladry of the title track, with plenty of stops in between. Somehow, it all fits together seamlessly. One of the reasons may be the economy of the tunes; Martin likes 'em short and sweet, and nothing on VUELVE sticks around long enough to wear out its welcome.
Engineers include: Benny Faccone, Rik Pekkonen, Steve Churchyard.
Personnel: Ricky Martin (background vocals); Lázaro Rodriguez, Michael Thompson, Manny López (guitar); Joseph Lito Cortés (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Phillipe Bourgués, Peter Yussi Wenger, Marcelo Berestovoy, Rich Gomez, Ramon Stagnaro, Rusty Anderson (acoustic guitar); Michael Landau (electric guitar); Leo Quintero (cuatro); Andy Abaz (tres); Ethan James (hurdy-gurdy); Luis Aguino (trumpet); Erik Kerly (French horn); John Kricker (trombone); Robbie Buchanan (piano, keyboards); Robi Rosa (piano, bass programming, palmas, background vocals); John Beasley, Paquito Hechavarria, Randy Waldman, Gloria Cheng (piano); K.C. | | Something To Believe In CD (1999) Soundtrack
You songs
$14.65 For this love story about a young pianist, Lalo Schifrin was able to write a lush, melodic score for once (though his rhythmic tendencies finally came out in No One Home). The centerpiece of the score is the 42-minute "Piano Concerto #2 (The Americas)," which is nothing less than a serious contemporary classical work disguised as movie soundtrack music. Typical of a soundtrack composer, however, it is fragmented, with many conflicting sections and no real development beyond an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach that seems intended to dazzle with the composer's sheer virtuosity. Both in its brashness and in its lack of organization, it sounds like the sort of thing a much younger composer, one needing to prove himself, would write. Also included are English and Italian versions of a title song with lyrics by Tim Rice that are wasted in the English version, since Placido Domingo, for all the glory of his voice, has no command of the language and cannot be understood. Far more coherent is Simply Red, who contribute "We're in This Together." ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Howard Wiley Angola Project CD (2007)
You album
$15.89 A 9-piece ensemble including strings and vocals presents these highly unique jazz compositions. The music unites the sounds of jazz, gospel and blues. Special guests include legendary saxophonist David Murray. The Project:THE LOUISIANA STATE PENITENTIARY MISSION STATEMENT:It is the philosophy of Louisiana State Penitentiary to provide services in a professional manner so as to protect the safety of the public, the staff and the inmate population. Consistent with this, it is Louisiana State Penitentiary’s responsibility to provide meaningful opportunities to enhance, through a variety of education, work, social service and medical programs, the individual's desire to become a productive member of society. And in that mission…they’ve created much more…“HOWARD WILEY & THE ANGOLA STATE PRISON PROJECT”:ANGOLA LOUISIANA STATE PENITENTIARY SPIRITUALS EXPLORED THROUGH JAZZ.Three vocalists…two bass players…saxophone, trombone, trumpet & drums…Not only is this a very unique grouping of musicians, but a very unique piece of music as well. Howard Wiley has been commissioned to create and expand upon the African-American spirituals and vocalizations which originated from a combination of gospel music and slave chants in the Angola Prison in the 1950’s.The call and response technique between a leader and the “congregation” serves as a base for this musical exploration. Slavery, prison, and field work created this music which was often directed by a lead worker or in some cases a preacher. The lead soloist would sing ahead of the rest of the workers, often improvising with written text and African musical melodies. The congregation would in turn respond to create a new and unique sound which invoked stories, struggles, and a valuable (often lost), musical form.Personnel: Howard Wiley, saxophone, Jeannine Anderson, vocals, Lorin Benedict, vocals, David Ewell, bass, Devin Hoff, bass, Geechi Taylor, trumpet, Sly Randolph, drums, Yerdua Cesear, violin, Vivian McBride, violin, and special guests, Danny Armstrong, trombone, Faye Carol, vocals, & David Murray, saxophone.Howard Wiley:Howard Wiley is the type of person who exemplifies the word “character” from both sides of the spectrum…by having it, and by being one. Always willing to take the music or the conversation to the next level, it’s rare to end the music, or the conversation, without a smile on your face.Born in Berkeley, California, Howard Wiley displayed the seeds of his musical talent at a very young age. Wiley found himself playing in the most nurturing of all environments for young African American musicians; the church. Throughout the history of jazz, the church has been root and center of the community, giving musicians, worshipers, and preachers alike the freedom and comfort to express themselves in ...
