Although this music is historic, it is quite erratic. George Lewis was one of the top New Orleans clarinetists when he was on but during most of these titles he is noticeably out-of-tune. Trumpeter Louis "Kid Shots" Madison is also quite streaky and, although trombonist Jim Robinson is consistent and the pianoless rhythm section (banjoist Lawrence Marrero, bassist Alcide "Slow Drag" Pavageau and drummer Baby Dodds) is solid, the weak frontline sinks this effort even with the inclusion of the earliest version of "Burgundy Street Blues." The CD concludes with three obscure performances by the same group with Bunk Johnson on trumpet; this version of "Sister Kate" was previously unissued. But there are many more rewarding George Lewis performances to be found elsewhere. ~ Scott Yanow

With Kid Shots music CDs
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia ...

Long considered one of, if not the classic album from the Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert defines them simultaneously as a recording entity as well as a working band. MJQ presented jazz in the context of a formally structured environment, much like a chamber group in the classical context. Within the band, the groove of Milt "Bags" Jackson's vibes met the solid swing of Connie Kay's drums, the funky strut of Percy Heath's bass, and the elegant classicism of John Lewis's piano. The MJQ were able, in a context that pushed at jazz's boundaries from the outside, to create a music that swung without edges or fragmented harmonic structures. Instead -- as this album perhaps more than any of their studio recordings exemplifies -- they used concepts of time, space, meter, rhythm, and changes to weave together a seamless whole, where melody grounded the improvisation but never really restricted it. The kind of graceful counterpoint ...
| | Funky Stuff CD (1993)
With Kid Shots music CDs
$6.39 For those looking to find a crash course in "the funk" -- a quick introduction to the fusion of R&B, soul, jazz, blues, good old rock & roll, and all-out outrageousness that creates the ultimate good groove -- you can't do much better than the Funk Essentials compilations. Funky Stuff: The Best of Funk Essentials is the perfect portrait. With its contents drawn from the single-band Funk Essentials compilation albums, this clean, clear set provides incredible diversity while keeping the vibe connected. In other words, Funky Stuff is not only an introduction to the heaviest of hitters, but also a nifty, smooth ride for the already initiated. Opening with (of course!) Parliament's seminal 1978 number one "Flashlight," included in its nearly 11-minute 12" extended version, it's just a short hop to the bright brass of Kool & the Gang's whistle-punctuated "Funky Stuff." Both bands are reprised a little ...
