Street Jams: Electric Funk, Vol. 3 is another terrific collection of old-school hip-hop and electro-funk from the early '80s, containing 12 tracks, almost all in their original 12" mixes. Only a handful of these songs, such as Grandmaster Flash's "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)," were big hits, but there are a number of songs that became ...
| | Reginald R Robinson Sounds In Silhouette CD (1994)
Oxford Series, Vol. 10 songs
$13.29 Ragtime, which had largely died with Scott Joplin in 1917, did not begin a renaissance until Marvin Hamlisch used some of Joplin's compositions as the basis of his soundtrack to The Sting in 1973. Reginald R. Robinson, who coincidentally was born in 1973, quickly emerged not only as one of ragtime's top practitioners of the mid-'90s but (along with David Thomas Roberts) as its top contemporary composer. On his second Delmark release he performs 19 selections including Scott Joplin's "Peacherine Rag," a medley of turn-of-the-century pieces by Charles Johnson and 17 of his own compositions. Robinson does not feel the need to "update" ragtime but he does infuse it with many fresh new melodies and his enthusiasm. He ...
| | Pure 80'S Hits CD (2001)
Oxford Series, Vol. 10 album
$12.25 "Oh, no!" you might cry. "Not another '80s new wave compilation." Well, set your fears aside. While PURE '80s HITS does include some of the skinny-tie classics included on other collections of '80s hits by the likes of Duran Duran, Simple Minds, and Kim Wilde, the disc takes a broader view of the decade fashion forgot.
This feat is accomplished by expanding beyond new wave into the pure pop of Rick Springfield's "Human Touch," post-prog rock in Asia's "Heat of the Moment," blue-eyed soul on Hall & Oates' "You Make My ...

| | Debbie Davies All I Found CD (2005)
Oxford Series, Vol. 10 music CDs
$15.05 Debbie Davies doesn't play straight blues on All I Found, her eighth release as a bandleader and her first for Telarc Records, so much as a kind of blues-inflected country-pop somewhat reminiscent of Bonnie Raitt, only without Raitt's distinctive, drop-dead slide guitar technique. Make no mistake, Davies plays some solid guitar on this album (she got her start playing in Albert Collins' Icebreakers, after all), and she has Arthur Neilson on loan from Shemekia Copeland on second guitar to keep things sizzling on three cuts, but somehow under all that stellar guitar work, several of these songs seem a little tired, and "Troughin'," a humorous ditty about overeating, is downright irritating. The organ-dominated title tune (with Bruce Katz ...
