Purchase Johnny St. Cyr CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Little George Smith Harmonica Ace CD (1993) (Import) United Kingdom
Johnny St. Cyr album
$16.65 All songs written or co-written by Little George Smith except "Blues Stay Away" and "Down In New Orleans" (Taub).
Smith cut these sides for Joe Bihari of Modern Records shortly after he left the Muddy Waters Band in the early '50s. He is featured here with a rhythm section framed by horns arranged by the legendary and prolific Maxwell Davis. Smith's innate sense of drive and swing, coupled with his rich and diverse palette of texture and tone, truly place him in the very first rank of modern harp masters. This disc is aptly described by note-writer Ray Topping as "a lasting memorial to one of the last great harp players of the postwar blues scene." ~ Larry Hoffman
Includes liner notes by Ray Topping.

| Herb Morand 1949 CD (1994)
Johnny St. Cyr album
$13.99 Veteran swing/New Orleans trumpeter Herb Morand is heard in two different settings on this interesting collector's LP. The first 11 selections (seven previously unreleased) were cut in the studios with a sextet that also included clarinetist Albert Burbank, trombonist Louis Nelson, and guitarist Johnny St. Cyr. Morand has three vocals and Burbank sings on "Eh! La Bas," with the highlights including "Sheik of Araby," "Milenberg Joys," and "Nobody's Sweetheart." The last four numbers (none out before) are taken from a live set by Morand's quintet, a group also including Andrew Morgan on tenor and clarinet. Although the music is primitive at times, Morand is generally in fine form late in his life and fans of New Orleans revival jazz (which this slightly predates) will be interested in this rare material. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Dr Michael White Jazz From The Soul Of New Orleans CD (2002)
Johnny St. Cyr CD music
$13.05 Clarinetist/educator Dr. Michael White doggedly insists on the fresh creative potential of the very earliest jazz, and on this record he makes the case eloquently. Playing standards, crafty originals, and public domain spirituals, White emphasizes the polyglot nature of the New Orleans jazz heritage. The Spanish tinge of "Martinique" and "Calypso Girl," the gospel strains of "In the Beautiful Garden of Prayer," the good-time swing of "Fidgety Feet": White's fluttering, soulful clarinet directs it all, and his group responds with spirited, back-to-basics improvisation. (Thais Clark's bawdy vocal on "Horn Man Blues" is priceless.) One can hear echoes of White's old-but-new concept on more modern albums like Ted Nash's Sidewalk Meeting. ~ David R. Adler
Clarinetist Dr. Michael White presents his second Basin Street album, a lively collection of traditional jazz standards & originals that demonstrate White's commitment to both preserving & expanding the jazz style of his native city. Driving rhythms, col

| | Dixieland Ramblers On Campus CD (2004)
Johnny St. Cyr album
$13.25 The Dixieland Ramblers are out for fun as they explore fight songs associated with various colleges. Now consisting of a sextet, with trombonist Harry Watters, trumpeter Kevin Clark, and clarinetist Michael Bennett, plus pianist Peter Hill, bassist Ka Cheong Liu and drummer Chris Lamont, the group reworks the "Notre Dame Victory March" into the setting of a New Orleans street parade. "Ramblin' Wreck From Georgia Tech" is played in a bluesy, subdued fashion by the rhythm section alone, sounding something like the Vince Guaraldi Trio. Watters is the featured soloist in the loopy but fun take of "Tiger Rag." It's only natural that their version of "Indiana, My Indiana" would incorporate a bit of "Back Home Again in Indiana," but it is the brilliant interplay that makes this performance special. The hilarious closer is "Far Above Cayuga's Waters," with Dixieland blended with funk and a touch of gospel. Aside from college campuses, few of these songs (excepting "Tiger Rag") are heard much anymore, so these updated treatments are well-worth investigating. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Kermit Ruffins Throwback CD (2005)
Johnny St. Cyr music CDs
$11.69 Kermit Ruffins had a reunion with the Rebirth Brass Band for this 2005 release. Ruffins dominates the music to an extent, contributing the majority of the selections, usually taking a vocal and adding a few spectacular trumpet solos. His good-humored description on "What Is New Orleans, Pt. 2" now sounds nostalgic and a bit wistful since this was recorded right before Hurricane Katrina, and it unintentionally describes what is lost and will hopefully return someday. The Rebirth Brass Band are in fine form, particularly the mighty tuba playing of Philip Frazier. Most of the performances are celebratory and perfect party music (other than the annoying closing rap "Up in tha Hood"), soulful yet tied to the brass band tradition while still looking ahead. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
