This recording should not have been released. At the time, Kid Ory's New Orleans jazz group also included trumpeter Andrew Blakeney, either Archie Rosati or Joe Darensbourg on clarinet, pianist Buster Wilson, guitarist Bud Scott, bassist Ed Garland, and drummer Minor Hall. It isn't that they play poorly, but ten of the dozen songs on the previously unreleased live set have vocals, and the singer (usually Scott) is so distant as to sound as though he singing from across the street! In addition, the constantly distracting audience is so enthusiastic in spots that it occasionally drowns out the band; plus, nothing all that unusual occurs in the instrumental solos to make this unfortunate recording worth putting out. Not every performance by every band deserves to be released. ~ Scott Yanow
trombonist is joined by Andrew Blakeney-tpt, Archie Rosati/Joe Darensbourg-clt, Buster Wilson-pno, Ed Garland-bss, Minor Hall-drms

| | George Benson Greatest Hits Of All CD (2003) Remastered
At Crystal Pier 1947 songs
$10.19 Recorded between 1976 & 1998. Includes liner notes by Don Heckman.
Basically, this "greatest hits of all" is simply that: the highest-charting tracks in George Benson's long career -- highest-charting pop and adult contemporary tracks, that is. Benson had been on the scene over a decade before signing with Warner Bros., and many of his jukebox and R&B hits were recorded for Creed Taylor's CTI label. Some of Benson's recorded work that held those hits has been reissued in the past two years. Of the Warner material, they have gauged success by chart placement -- not sales, not radio play, not artist choice. Therefore, while the stellar tracks from Breezin', ...

| | Ursula 1000 Ursadelica CD (2004)
At Crystal Pier 1947 album
$13.05 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Ursula 1000.
DJ Ursula 1000 has quite the ear for tunes, and knows how to mix 'em -- the extragroovy mix album Ursadelica is the proof. The first quarter of Ursadelica could be mistaken for an album of the DJ's own sampadelic and tres chic productions. Not a problem, but not surprising enough for the nonbelievers. Things get tricky right around Kraak en Smaak's "One of These Days," with tracks getting loopier and fading in and out, most likely due to the DJ's twiddling. It's the gateway to what most makes the album worth hearing -- Ursula's love of cheeky, smiley disco. Swirling around the room -- or maybe headphones -- Frank de Jojo's "Come Home Baby" is a tasty disco-house treat while Nasty Tales revives the campy chestnut "Come on a My House" with a light breakbeat. Great stuff, and Ursula points it out with ...
| | Enrico Rava Full Of Life CD (2003)
At Crystal Pier 1947 CD music
$14.55 Enrico Rava's new quartet has no piano or guitar. Already this is not only an anomaly for Italian jazzers, but also a rare occasion in the jazz world everywhere today. Rava's haunted mysterious lyricism has become more and more pronounced over the past decade, and his new band reveals the depth of commitment to exploring new avenues in it. With Javier Girotto on baritone and soprano saxophones, sensational bassist Ares Tavolazzi, and Fabrizio Sferra on drums, the makeup of this band is not unlike that of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet with Chet Baker. But makeup is where the similarities end. Rava's sense of adventure is wide-ranging and his restraint in tempo and multi-textural dynamics surpasses the concerns of Mulligan's pioneering experiments in harmony. For instance, the sprightly read of "Surrey With the Fringe on Top" is a commingling of two contrapuntal melodies meeting in the center of a harmonic structure geared to open on either end. On "Mystère," Girotto's statement of theme is halted after six notes before Rava enters, playing around those same notes and eventually creating a melody that whispers by on the changes, or perhaps in spite of them. The funky blues syncopation in Girotto's composition "Miss MG" plays on the staccato concerns of bebop before opening onto a theme that could have been written by Jimmy Giuffre for clarinet -- but here it is scripted for baritone ...
