| | Modern Jazz Quartet European Concert Volumes 1 & 2 CD (1960)
1956
$10.55 Recorded live in Scandinavia in April 1960. Originally released on Atlantic (2-603). Includes liner notes by Joel Dorn and Jule Foster.
Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus Digital Services, New York, New York).
Long considered one of, if not the classic album from the Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert defines them simultaneously as a recording entity as well as a working band. MJQ presented jazz in the context of a formally structured environment, much like a chamber group in the classical context. Within the band, the groove of Milt "Bags" Jackson's vibes met the solid swing of Connie Kay's drums, the funky strut of Percy Heath's bass, and the elegant classicism of John Lewis's piano. The MJQ were able, in a context that pushed at jazz's boundaries from the outside, to create a music that swung without edges or fragmented harmonic structures. Instead -- as this album perhaps more than any of their studio recordings exemplifies -- they used concepts ...
| | Ravi Shankar Passages CD (1990)
1956
$7.59 Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass met in Paris in 1965, when Glass was a young aspiring composer and Shankar was confirming his place in the world's classical canon. Shankar acted as an informal mentor to Glass, and their interaction inspired Glass to consider the possibilities of rhythm. By the time they joined forces at a New York City studio, in 1989, the two occupied a more level playing field.
PASSAGES differs from previous collaborations that Shankar had undertaken with Western musicians such as Yehudi Mehuhin, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and George ...
| | Mandrill Just Outside Of Town CD (1973)
1956
$11.69 It lacked the delicious hooks and tight funk of Composite Truth, but Just Outside of Town was as solid and confident a piece of music-making as the band ever accomplished. The single "Mango Meat" is a tough Latin funk number with some inspired group harmonizing, and Mandrill stretched out with a pair of love songs, "Never Die" and the aptly titled "Love Song," the latter beginning with a few minutes of atmospheric bliss that boasted unrealized cinematic/soundtrack possibilities. "Fat City Strut" moves back and forth between blasts of brass-powered funk and the sweet seduction of Latin percussion and a vibes solo. The distorted funk monster "Two Sisters of Mystery" is another classic, one that later enticed producer Gary G-Wiz to sample it for Public Enemy's "By the Time I Get to Arizona." The last ...
| | KT Sullivan Sing My Heart CD (1995)
1956
$9.19 For her second release for the DRG label, K.T. Sullivan directs her shimmering, scintillating soprano to the works of one of America's most prolific and successful songsmiths, Harold Arlen. She has selected tunes that Arlen wrote for stage and film. Not limited to just his better-known gems, the play list is dotted with samples of his less-familiar, but still bewitching, works. One of the more captivating tracks is one that comes from the less-familiar category, the medley of"Little Drops of Rain"and "Right As the Rain," ...

1956
$14.09 Having composed the music for the songs in 16 Broadway musicals between 1947 and 1993, among them Funny Girl and Gypsy, Jule Styne is most closely associated with the musical theater. But he also had an extensive career writing songs for the movies in the decade before his Broadway run began, as annotator and producer Tommy Krasker details in his liner notes to this album; in fact, he earned ten Academy Award nominations for best song (in some cases for songs written after he left Hollywood), finally winning the award for "Three Coins in the Fountain." In a sense, Krasker takes the movie Styne back to the stage on this collection, hiring a bevy of current Broadway stars such as Audra McDonald, Sutton Foster, Rebecca Luker, and Marin Mazzie ...
