In March 2001 at the 2nd Annual Smooth Jazz Awards in Chicago, Fattburger joined a select group in receiving a nomination for Band of the Year, an honor which reflected the San Diego unit's unique legacy as one of contemporary jazz's most enduring and popular ensembles. Fattburger's fifth Shanachie release T.G.I.F. (as in, Thank God It's Fattburger) blends their trademark cool "Sound of San Diego" with more aggressive, in your face type funk elements, a touch of blues and Latin and Brazilian influences. Fattburger has always been best known on disc for its easygoing and likeable melodies, but over the years, guitarist Evan Marks has added an explosive rock/fusion edge, most notably on the intense retro-blues funk flavored closing track "2 Fatt," which also features a swinging Tower of Power styled horn section. Marks also fires up an explosive, heavily percussive twist on the old Santana Tune "Evil Ways" (trying to "out Santana Santana," no doubt!). Fattburger had tremendous success a few albums back with a cover of "Oye Como Va," and would gravitate towards "Evil Ways" while doing the other tune in live performances. Other tracks on the new recording include Koch's "Mum's the Word," an easygoing, kick back reflection dedicated to the drummer's mother; Evans' Southwestern-flavored "Santa Fe," another guitar led Latin rock/funk tune, which blends Spanish and Native American influences, and whose vibe suggests the landscape of the New Mexico region; the energetic bossa nova of "Heaven," written by Marks with San Diego keyboardist Rob Whitlock (and featuring Marks playing a subtle acoustic melody, offering further tastes of his exciting mood swinging diversity); and the Southern-styled, bluesy (bassist) Mark Hunter/Marks tune "Down Home." Following in the wake of the 2002 archival release Solo (Koln) 1978, Solo (Milano) 1979 presents another previously unavailable live recording of one of two concerts performed within three days in Milano in January 1979. While the previous album sported a sound quality that matched the impressive performance, this one requires more dedication from the listener. Hissy and flat in places, the tape challenges the ear before the music has a chance to challenge the mind. That said, fans will find the album worth owning, especially since it contains a few compositions that had been left undocumented. The set is typical of late-'70s solo Braxton: a mix of really harsh pieces ("Composition No. 8i," "Composition No. 119a"), full of tongue stabs that sound like daggers, ear-piercing high notes, and incredibly brutal dynamic shifts alongside softer tunes ("Composition No. 99m," for instance) based on circular or cascading motifs. In the latter pieces, the jazz vein is never far. Two standards, "I Remember Clifford" and "Out of Nowhere," relieve tension in key points of the set while proving to the quiet audience that the man was not all virtuosity and abstraction. Braxton is in good shape, but he sounds tired in "Composition No. 99m," having trouble keeping the triplets flowing elegantly and resting just a bit too much on the long notes. Solo (Milano) 1979 makes a nice addition to a fan's collection, but it has a more marginal value. ~ François ...

If there was an acoustic-oriented version of Placebo, it might very well be this trio. The opening "Autobahn" contains all of the aura and nuances of the British group, with guitarist Chris Jackson filling the bridge with strong pop/rock riffs.
