Released in 1976, OXYGENE proved to be a massive hit for French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre. The son of film composer Maurice Jarre, the synthesizer player sought to create warmer sonic textures through the technology of the time, and the result was this pioneering six-part album. OXYGENE's bizarrely creepy cover, featuring a skull underneath the peeled-away surface of the globe, belies the music's lush beauty, though it does point to haunting moments such as "Oxygene III." The record's most recognizable track is the majestic "Oxygene IV," which features percolating synth lines and spare, nearly imperceptible beats. While the album would lead Jarre to international fame, especially in his native France and the rest of Europe, it also proved to be a recording that he struggled to top, even going so far as to release a sequel, OXYGENE 7-13, more than 20 years later. For aficionados of late-'70s electronic acts such as Tangerine Dream and Vangelis, this bold outing is essential.
One of the pioneers of electronic music, Jean Michel Jarre has arguably done more to popularize the use of synthesizers than any other artist. Liberating synthesized sound from the esoteric preoccupations of academic composers, Jarre was among the first to explore the instrument's melodic and rhythmic possibilities--key innovations that went on to become significant influences for ambient electronica, synth pop, and techno. OXYGENE, released in 1977, pushed the young composer into the international spotlight, charting his meteoric rise from obscure film composer to stadium-packing superstar. Contrasting with the hard, clinical sound of his contemporaries, Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder, OXYGENE is bathed in distinctive melodies and warm string pads (courtesy of vintage keyboards like the Synthi VCS3 and Eminent organ). On the now iconic space synth epic "Oxygene (Part IV)," a percolating drum machine patters away as sweeping synth melodies form dramatic arcs of counterpoint. Likely to be Jarre's best known composition, the track evokes vast unexplored spaceways and cosmic vistas like few songs can.
Jean Michel Jarre, son of film composer Maurice Jarre, is one of the true pioneers of electronic music. Oxygene is one of the original e-music albums. It has withstood the test of time and the evolution of digital electronica. Jarre's compositional style and his rhythmic instincts were his strong points in 1976. While his popularity has escalated exponentially over the years, he never quite achieved the quality of this amazing recording. The innocence and freshness provide most of its charm. Jarre's techniques and ability provide the rest. This epic CD will appeal to fans of Tonto's Expanding HeadBand, Tangerine Dream, Synergy, Kraftwerk, and Klaus Schulze. ~ Jim BrenholtsWhich CD - Neutral

5 stars The Quintessential Album for Electronic Music
A true pioneer in electronic music. Jarre, Vangelis, Walter Carlos and Tomita started a musical reveolution that echoes even in today's music. You can hear arpeggios in all trance, house and breaks even today. Jarre, is the godfather of electronic textures and atmospheres. This Texan met him a Plaza de la Concorde, Paris in 1979 the day before his first concert. I was 18. One of the nicest and most genuine personalities you'd ever want to meet. He has been a musical influence my entire life and has shaped how I compose music to this day. Now sell me your Elka Synthex Jean-Michel! :)

4 stars Nearly 30 years old.
Its hard to believe that this CD is nearly 30 years old!!!!!!. It still sounds fresh. No wonder bands like Air and Daft Punk are around with a fellow French influence like JMJ to inspire them. A classic, get it !!!!!

5 stars Influential Is An Understatement !!
The first time I heard this album as a young boy in the early 70s it changed my whole view of music. This is the ultimate instrumental album of it's time. There is no other album that comes close in it's genre. A true ground breaking artistic statement. A pioneer ahead of his time.

As the follow up album to Oxygene, Equinoxe offers the same mesmerizing affect, with rapid spinning sequencer washes and bubbling synthesizer portions all lilting back and forth to stardust scatterings of electronic pastiches. Using more than 13 different types of synthesizers, Jarre combines whirling soundscapes of multi-textured effects, passages, and sometimes suites to culminate interesting electronic atmospheres. Never repeating the same sounds twice, it is obvious that the science fiction hype of the late 70's played a large part in the making of this album. Computerized rhythms and keyboard-soaked transitions scurry by, replaced by even quicker, more illustrious ones soon after. There is always a pulsating beat or a fluttering tempo happening somewhere in each of the tracks, which are titled as a numbered sequence one to eight. Each track harbors its own energy and electronic fleetness, but none are identical in sound or pace. So much electronic color is added to every track that it is impossible to concentrate on any particular segment, resulting in waves of synth drowning the ears at high tide. ~ Mike DeGagne
Synthesizer master Jarre built an entire career around the renown he achieved through this 1978 recording. Performed entirely on synthesizers, EQUINOXE consists of a single piece divided up into eight movements. Clearly influenced by the more melodic side of mid-period Tangerine Dream and Vangelis, Jarre filled this album with gauzy, atmospheric synth textures

Les Chants Magnetiques was the third of Jean Michel Jarre's albums in a row to update Tangerine Dream's atmospheric sequencer trance for a synth pop and mainstream crossover audience. The side-long "Les Chants Magnetiques, Pt. 1" is the capstone of the album, while "Pt. 2" through "Pt. 5" move through driving electronic pop and several passages more indebted to Jarre's past in the musique concrète scene. It's often just as melodic and inventive as Oxygene, though not as consistently creative. ~ John Bush

On the first departure of his career since 1977's Oxygène, Jean Michel Jarre combined an actual band and processed vocal samples -- recorded in 25 different languages -- with his rich, melodic synthesizer pop. The rhythm is often propelled by guttural vocal snippets, as on "Ethnicolor" and "Zoolookologie." That's not half as disconcerting for those used to his previous work as the album's art-funk backing: Adrian Belew on guitar, Marcus Miller on bass, and Yogi Horton on drums, plus Laurie Anderson on one track. Though Zoolook is interesting throughout, the tracks with Jarre alone are often the best, reprising the classic Oxygène sound. ~ John Bush

The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion).
Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002.
You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what does, expect for maybe a VH1-endorsed piece of product like Live in Dublin. Lo and behold, that's exactly what the Corrs received in the spring of 2002, a year and a half after "In Blue" and its accompanying single "Breathless" broke down the doors in America for the U.S. Only two songs on this set list are shared with In Blue, but that doesn't mean that the group returns to their slightly more traditional Celtic roots on the remainder of the songs. Sure, there are hints of that, but there are also four pop covers, two of them ("Little Wing" and "Ruby Tuesday") featuring Ron Wood, with another song, the Lee Hazelwood/Nancy Sinatra duet "Summer Wine," featuring Bono. Some of this is not unfamiliar to the Corrs' repertoire, since they did cover "Little Wing" before, on Talk on Corners (plus an MTV Unplugged release), but the end result is the same -- it's a crossover collection, not an album that emphasizes their Celtic roots. This wouldn't be a problem if the seams weren't so transparent -- if each selection didn't seem like it was a way to expand the group's audience, if it didn't seem like the soundtrack to post-yuppie ...

Oxygène 7-13 continues where Jean-Michel Jarre left off 20 years before, that is, with the last track ("Part 6") of 1977's Oxygène. Much had changed in the interim, for both Jarre and synthesizer technology. The result is a set of up-tempo, highly melodic electronic trance reminiscent of Steve Hillage's work of the time, as well as German trance producers ...

Depeche Mode-like electronic rhythms are mixed over melancholic vibes of solitude." - Download.com Music Editors"The sound quality is excellent, and Frank's vocals are just as perfect as always. All four songs are really excellent, but 'Retrospect' is my favorite so far.. but that changes every time I listen to the disc.. This is a very promising set of songs, and I think the synthpop world is in for a very special treat when halovox's debut album is released in June! Big Purple Sky
Fishkill Big Purple Sky CD  (2002)

Oxygene
CD $8.39
The Big Purple Sky was the first attempt to record a full-length CD using digital technology. This resulted in a much clearer sound and a lot less distortion. The record featured many new songs and a few old songs that were re-recorded. "Freedom" was recorded in almost the exact same way as the original. The tape containing the original master of the track was inadvertently destroyed, so the piece was re-recorded on the new digital equipment. The song "Wasting," however, was a complete departure from the original harder-sounding version. This track now was an experiment in trip-hop with the mechanical sounding keyboard and haunting string arrangements. The most notable singles from this CD were "Jeffrey's Refrigerator," a pop punk commentary on things some people will spend their money on and "Make It Shine," a mope-rock ballad with an optimistic shiny center that states that no matter how bad it gets, you can make it better if you try. Interestingly, this particular song inspired the Axis 1 remake, using most of the original instrument tracks and also placed well in the indie charts at the time. The project was a challenge with learning new software and mastering the technique of online recording. "Everything that could go wrong during these sessions did!" Songwriter Chris Nelson explained at the time of its realease, "First, the software didn't do what I'd intended, next there were problems with getting the levels right, finally I broke a snare head during the last session." There were actually two more songs that were supposed to be included but never were recorded because of the technical difficulties. Even the simplest things, such as final mixdown were radically different from the way things were done in the reel-to-reel environment. Overall, the project ...
