The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau has been one of television's most celebrated programs of all time. Jean Michel Jarre, a countryman of Jacques Cousteau, composed and performed an e-music opus on honor of the oceanographer. En Attendant Cousteau is a departure from Jarre's usual format. This disc has three tracks that are longer than his normal tracks. (They are between six and nine minutes.) The fourth track is a major work clocking in at 47 minutes. That track, "En Attendant Cousteau," is an epic minimalist creation. This is groundbreaking stuff, an unusual mode for Jarre. Jarre has not gone this far out on a limb since his debut in 1976. It is a worthy risk. The atmospheric minimalism of the title track is deep and substantial. This is a great CD, certainly one of Jarre's top three. It will appeal to fans of Robert Scott Thompson, Jeff Pearce, James Johnson, and Mychael Danna. (Interestingly, Paul Nagle created a tongue-in-cheek tribute to this album and Jarre by recording Waiting for Clouseau in the late '90s. Nagle's album is humorous and enjoyable.) ~ Jim Brenholts

En Attendant Cousteau Music Jean-Michel Jarre En Attendant Cousteau Songs En Attendant Cousteau Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews A truly refined piece of Art The first three tracks may not please most Jarre fans, although they are still some of his finest work, however the title track is truly an extraordinary composition. One of the finest pieces of ambient music ever recorded. Even Brian Eno got wet listening to this. Submitted by j4rr3-f4n (Laval, QC, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Different, yet interesting album. Certainly different from other Jarre albums, yet surprisingly good. Submitted by a reviewer (Boulder, Colorado, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One of the master's last great works... I don't much care for any of Jarre's music later than this album, but just when everybody thought they had him pegged as a pop-synthesist, he comes along and turns an installation piece into a spectacular ambient journey.
The first and last tracks are the only ones worth buying this CD for. Submitted by a reviewer (Providence, RI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This Disc is Rot First things first. I'm a fan of JARRE and rate Revolutions very highly along with most of his catalogue. However this CD must have been designed for sleep therapy, because I fell asleep within several minutes of listening to this garbage. My dog loves this CD as it makes a good frisbee. Yes this CD is so bad I give it the FRISBEE rating! Don't bother wasting your money unless you suffer from Insomnia. Submitted by Malcolm (Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Weaker than previous albums... ..but still good, though very uneven! Calypso 2 are one of JMJ's best tracks ever and Calypso 1 is excellent as well. The title track shoud have been shorter though! Calypso 3 is good but not one of JMJ's best tracks.. Overall: 3 stars. Submitted by Bj-1 (Norway) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$9.89 On the first departure of his career since 1977's Oxygène, Jean Michel Jarre combined an actual band and processed vocal samples -- recorded in 25 different languages -- with his rich, melodic synthesizer pop. The rhythm is often propelled by guttural vocal snippets, as on "Ethnicolor" and "Zoolookologie." That's not half as disconcerting for those used to his previous work as the album's art-funk backing: Adrian Belew on guitar, Marcus Miller on bass, and Yogi Horton on drums, plus Laurie Anderson on one track. Though Zoolook is interesting throughout, the tracks with Jarre alone are often the best, reprising the classic Oxygène sound. ~ John Bush

While it can be easy to dislike and dismiss some cookie-cutter electronic music, the challenge lies in finding reasons to listen to it again. Such is the case with Revolutions by Jean Michel Jarre. One reviewer wrote, simply, "(This) is not revolutionary." That ...
