French synth wizard Jean-Michel Jarre was a crucial force in the development of the new age instrumental genre. By taking what had been, for the most part, underground avant-garde electronic experiments and making them more symphonic, melodic, and accessible, Jarre became an international success, and his best work, collected on IMAGES, demonstrates a keen compositional approach. Stretching back to his first album, 1977's OXYGENE, and continuing through the '80s and '90s, IMAGES gives a full picture of Jarre's evolution and his increasingly savvy use of technology to create unique, atmospheric music. Boasting 17 tracks and remarkably crisp digital remastering, IMAGES is an excellent sampler of Jarre's distinctive aesthetic. Wonderful Mind of Jarre! I think this comilation is one of the best that I have heard of his music. Jean Michel Jarre fans will love to have this cd in their collection.
Every song on the disc was put on there for a reason and purpose. Jarre wanted fans to know his mind through music and see the landscapes that he does when he's composing music. Submitted by zypher69 (San Diego, Ca., USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Jean is also cool! Well, I have the 1st press of this release, which does not include the plus track (+ 3 bonus-tracks). If we consider the first press and we have some full-length albums which contain all tracks from this "Images", we rate this one as 5 stars, that is, great! Jean Michel is very talented in spite of appearing after Vangelis... The tracks detached from "Oxygene", "Equinoxe" and "Rendez-Vouz" show
how marvellous this release is! Submitted by samuraisword (São Paulo, SP, Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Gilberto Gil Kaya N'Gan Daya CD (2002) (Import) Canada

$11.65 KAYA N'GAN DAYA was nominated for the 2003 Latin Grammy for Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album.
Perhaps no one in the world outside Jamaica is better equipped to perform a Bob Marley tribute than Gilberto Gil. The two are very nearly equals; Gil meant as much to residents of Brazil as Marley did to Jamaicans -- even though popularity in Brazil means competing in a very crowded field. Gil is also an exact contemporary of Marley's (he is three years older, but began recording at the same time) and, like Marley, arrived at a distinctive sound only after years of working in the local vernacular. (For Marley it was ska and rocksteady, while for Gil it was bossa nova and samba.) He does owe a debt of gratitude to Bob Marley, however, for it was Marley's global stardom during the '70s that enabled Gil to begin making an impact overseas (especially in Africa). For Kaya N'Gan Daya, his second tribute album in two years (after the Luiz Gonzaga songbook Me, You, Them), Gil astonishingly supplants the formidable personality of Bob Marley and interprets his songs with a strength and vitality that would've found any of his ...
