Principally recorded at Kimbrough's Joint, Chulahoma, Mississippi.

The unlikely blues revival that occurred during the '90s, based around Fat Possum Records and supported by various indie punks and die-hard garage rockers, spurred an interest in a second wave of elderly near-death bluesmen. Chief among these legends was Holly Springs, Mississippi's Junior Kimbrough. While many blues musicians from the original '60s revival were worshipped for their dazzling skills and heartfelt vocals, Kimbrough was all about raw gutbucket emotion.

MOST THINGS HAVEN'T WORKED OUT, Kimbrough's third album for Fat Possum, contains all the key elements of the man's haunting sound. His signature droning guitar lines on the tracks "Lonesome Road" and "I'm Leaving You Baby" howl like banshees in the delta night, while on "Burn in Hell" his able backing band lays down quintessential Hill Country rhythms that increase the heat and turn things downright evil. And though Junior wasn't the best singer that ever picked up a guitar, he could say more about life's misery with a simple cry of "baby" than singers with a notebook full of deep thoughts ever could. MOST THINGS HAVEN'T WORKED OUT is not only an excellent introduction to Junior Kimbrough, it's one of the best blues records of the late 20th century.

Personnel: Junior Kimbrough (vocals, guitar); Kenny Brown (guitar); Garry Burnside (bass guitar); Kenny Malone (drums).

Recording information: Junior Kimbrough's Juke Joint, Chulahoma, MS; Lunati Farms, Holly Springs, MS.

Photographers: Ron Keith; Bill Steber.Down Beat (7/97, p.63) - 4 stars (out of 5) - "...Kimbrough's rambling single-note lines and nearly garbled singing about libido stick to you like sweat....raw, rude, rousing."

Junior Kimbrough's death in 1998 left a howling void in American blues music. GOD KNOWS I TRIED, Kimbrough's fourth Fat Possum recording and his first posthumous release, highlights the magnitude of the loss. Kimbrough single-handedly invented his own blues style, a mixture of hard-edged instrumentation, conversational, ghost-touched vocals, and, unique to the North Mississippi hill country, the looping, hypnotic guitar riffs which he plays through mild, fluid distortion, giving the whole a pulsing, dream-like quality. Kimbrough's style also relies heavily on improvisation, so the song structures seem to progress intuitively, as on the spooky "You're Gonna Find Your Mistake" with its meandering rhythm guitar and field-holler ...

On A Few Miles from Memphis, recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968, he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr. When record labels like Prestige release two albums on one CD, it's a great bargain for music fans. A Few Miles from Memphis combines the album of the same name and Rakin' and Scrapin', both recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968. On the first set he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. The second ...

Ike & Tina Turner Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good CD  (2006) Bonus Tracks

Most Things Haven't Worked Out album
CD $18.09
Raven's 2006 two-fer Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good combines two of Ike & Tina Turner's last albums together and adds five bonus tracks, three of which were taken from other Ike & Tina albums from the early '70s, one taken from a Tina solo record, and one disco mix of "Nutbush City Limits." The album that arrives first on this two-fer was actually the last of these two to be released: Nutbush City Limits appeared in 1973, a year after Feel Good, but its title track is one of Ike & Tina's best-known songs so it's an appropriate choice to kick off this disc. Besides, the two records are so similar in tone and approach, it'd be easy to assume that Feel Good arrived before Nutbush, but that isn't to say they're interchangeable. Both records are hard day-glo funk, overloaded with fuzz guitars, wah wahs, clavinets and horn sections, but of the two, Nutbush City Limits is a bit closer to gritty deep soul thanks to a slow-burning cover of Dobie Gray's country-soul classic "Drift Away," the gospel-fied "That's My Purpose," a churning, funky reworking of "You Are My Sunshine," and, of course, the hard-driving ...

Many of the legends of acoustic guitar in the 20th century have already passed on -- John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Ali Farka Toure. Due partially to his spare recording career, Peter Walker's own reputation has not always been as well known as those of said giants, but his own influence has been considerable. A Raga for Peter Walker -- a tribute album that, in a nice touch, not only consists of work composed ...
