$6.59 Though Gino Vannelli's third record didn't contain a big hit single like its predecessor, STORM AT SUNUP was a significant step forward artistically. Combining the Stevie Wonder-esque synth textures of POWERFUL PEOPLE with a complex jazz-rock fusion sound and vocal gymnastics occasionally reminiscent of Tim Buckley, the album finds Vannelli at his most musically ...
| | Average White Band Soul Searching CD (1976)
Get Down
$7.59 AWB's artistic winning streak continued with its outstanding fourth album, Soul Searching. Interestingly, this wasn't an album that enjoyed a great deal of publicity or that contained a lot of major hits. In fact, its biggest single, the dreamy "Queen of My Soul," only made it to number 21 on Billboard's R&B albums chart. But thanks to the devoted following AWB had acquired since signing with Atlantic in 1974, Soul Searching went gold. Indeed, AWB aficionados were quite receptive to first-rate material ranging from the invigorating "I'm the One" to the hauntingly romantic "A Love of Your Own." By zeroing in on their strengths -- hard-hitting funk and delightfully melodic soul -- AWB saw to it that Soul Searching was every bit as rewarding as its predecessors. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Meters CD (1969)
Get Down
$11.59 Initially created to be the house band for Allen Toussaint and Marhsall Sehonr's Sansu Enterprises, the Meters started out backing such famous names as Lee Dorsey and Betty Harris. Led by organist Art Neville, the quartet was rounded out by jazz-influenced guitarist Leo Nocentelli along with the bubbling rhythm section of bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste. Booker T. & The MGs may have been the most obvious influence, but the Meters differentiated themselves by injecting a healthy dose of New Orleans funk into their sound.
Led by Neville's fat-sounding organ, the Meters quickly scored hits with the sinewy "Cissy Strut" and the more languid "Sophisticated Cissy." ...

$11.99 SOLJA RAGS is marked by tightly mapped-out arrangements of the bouncy rhythms and wailing synths synonymous with the Southern sound. Juvenille and his cronies approach the mic with confidence and bring listeners into the heart of their own dementia and gangsta war tales. Tracks like "I Did That," featuring Big Moe & BG, is a classic posse cut with seamless mic passing over a tight track. The rest of the Hot Boys check in for "Spittin Game," further legitimizing their talent and that of maverick producer Mannie Fresh. Take a trip through the dark alleys of New Orleans. Don't worry, you'll be safe--it's only a record.
Master P and his No Limit soldiers raised Southern gangsta rap from a localized phenomenon to an entertainment empire. ...
| | Smokey Robinson Going To A Go-Go/Away We A Go-Go CD (2001) Import
Get Down
$13.95 Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves and Jeff Willens (Universal Mastering Studios-East).
The candy-coated vocals of Smokey Robinson are one of the most euphoric listening experiences in the soul/R&B world, and this release includes two of his albums: GOING TO A GO-GO and AWAY WE A GO-GO.
This pairing of albums originally released in 1965 and 1966 shows what a subtly powerful force Smokey Robinson and the Miracles were. GOING TO A GO-GO opens with one of their biggest and most enduring numbers, "The Tracks of My Tears." As was the working method at Motown, other tracks on the album had their origins in assorted earlier or later sessions. But such was the cohesive identity of Robinson's songs and voice that, taken as a whole, it's a strikingly organic work. By turns soulful, funky, popish and doo-wop-influenced, it represents a time of enormous possibilities for Robinson, Motown and music in general.
AWAY WE GO-GO continues the wining streak with Robinson's songs being joined by Holland-Dozier-Holland and a few other writers, including a pair by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, both of which are a perfect fit. Previously unreleased bonus tracks include the sweeping panorama of "Goin' Out of My Head" and a live version of "A Fork in the Road," where studio precision amazingly springs to perfect ...

| | No New York CD (1978)
Get Down
$18.89 NO NEW YORK is one of the definitive compilation albums not only of the post-punk era, but of rock-&-roll history. It is perhaps the only album to completely define a musical subgenre by itself. While James Chance & the Contortions, Mars, Teenage Jesus & the Jerks, and DNA made later recordings (in fact, Lydia Lunch and Arto Lindsay, leaders of the latter two bands, would have long and prolific careers), the 16 songs on the Brian Eno-produced NO NEW YORK encapsulate the No Wave movement. Its defining lack of musical sophistication--or even basic instrumental competence--could not be sustained for long. The Contortions, led by Chance's stuttering, squawking saxophone and hectoring vocals, were like a bizarre parody of 1970s funk, right down to their demented cover of James Brown's "I Can't Stand Myself." Teenage Jesus & the Jerks were arguably the closest to a conventional ...

$13.89 Though they're considered 1980s industrial dance music pioneers, the Vancouver band Front Line Assembly were largely forgotten in the genre's ensuing rise in popularity.
