(1 Customer Review)
For more than a decade Rod MacDonald has been a staple of the contemporary singer/songwriter world. This classic CD -- originally released in Europe -- includes some of Rod's personal favorites.Born and raised in Connecticut, Rod began appearing in New York's clubs and coffeehouses in the 1970s. After a three-year stint of national touring, Rod settled in the Village to become one of the driving forces behind the growing singer/songwriter scene there. In the mid-1980s, Rod co-founded the Greenwich Village Folk Festival, a free annual gathering that always attracts some of the city's best-known and up-and-coming performers.Originally issued on LP in 1987, "White Buffalo" was reissued on CD overseas by Brambus Records, but has never been readily available in U.S. retail stores until now.In addition to "White Buffalo", Rod has released "No Commerical Traffic" (1983), "Highway to Nowhere" (1991), and "The Man on the Ledge" (1994).
Greenwich Village in the mid-'80s was an unparalleled meeting place for the contemporary generation of songwriters. The group of writers who were drawn there and worked in the various clubs and co-ops that made up the scene have gone on to form the core of this country's important singer/songwriters. Gadfly Records has had the good sense to reissue Rod MacDonald's 1985 album, White Buffalo. It was originally released in a slightly different form by Autogram in Germany in 1985, then in Canada on the McDisk Label with the current tracks and an organ overdub, then again on CD by Brambus in Switzerland with a few extra cuts. Now finally White Buffalo is available in the U.S. in all its glory. MacDonald was one of the most active and dynamic of the Greenwich Village performers at that time and this record accurately represents how he sounded in the clubs. Recorded live in the attic studio of bassist Mark Dann after a sold out two night stand at the SpeakEasy (the important club in the village then), these sessions feature terrific, tight playing, the late Howie Wyeth on drums, John Kruth on banshee mandolin, Dann on bass, and Rod on guitar and harmonica. His classic songs "Song of My Brothers," "Blues for the River," "The Aliens Came in Business Suits," "Water," "Cross Country Waltz" and other superb tunes are all here. They are melodic, thoughtful and fun songs with great hooks; the ballads are bittersweet and haunting. Of his four albums to date, this one is his most consistent and true to his onstage sound. ~ Richard Meyer

$228.75 When the Everly Brothers left Cadence Records for Warner Brothers in 1960, they were the biggest rock & roll act in America, with the notable exception of Elvis Presley, who had just been drafted into the Army. The Everlys were survivors, withstanding shifting cultural tides and deftly sidestepping the pitfalls that befell their peers, avoiding jail and scandal when many of their peers couldn't seem to avoid it. But the duo wasn't successful merely because they kept their noses clean, but because their music had a broad appeal. Rooted in country, the Everlys could dip into their roots when necessary, clean up for a pop audience, while -- as the virtual inventors of the power chord -- rocking & rolling like nobody's business. This, combined with a lavish production that came with a major label, made for a set of recordings that were more varied and less consistent than their Cadence work, but their earliest sides for Warner were frequently compelling and always fascinating, as Bear Family's massive, seven-disc set The Price of Fame 1960-1965 shows.
Like many Bear Family sets, the listenability of The Price of Fame suffers somewhat by the chronological inclusion of alternate takes and session outtakes, a practice that can sometimes be interesting -- hearing the Brothers run through various tempos of "Burma Shave" or turn "Little Hollywood Girl" inside out is fascinating -- but these tend to weigh down the middle of the set, as do the Christmas carols, the handful of German and Italian recordings, and perfectly fine Cadence re-recordings that are all signs of the Everlys' ...
