| | Rod MacDonald And Then He Woke Up CD Rod MacDonald Discography of CDs
Rod MacDonald radiates romantic contentment on his fifth album, opening with "Happy All the Time," ain which he accedes to the wishes of his "girl [who] told me she'd had enough/of all my songs about losing love." Instead, he sings of finding love, notably in "On Any Old Sunday," which recounts his parents' first meeting, and of experiencing it in such songs as "I Can't Believe (How Good You've Been To Me)" and "Love for All Seasons." Of course, it isn't just that MacDonald's earlier songs were about losing love, it's that they adopted an outsider's stance, whereas the author of "Out In the Country," a reminiscence of youth, seems much more reconciled to the world. But lest we think that love has made for a de-fanged Rod MacDonald, he also includes several biting topical songs, notably "The Last Train to Pontiac," which criticizes the electorate for voting the Republicans in, and "Who Built the Bomb (That Blew Oklahoma City Down)?," which pins the blame on everyone from talk-show hosts to action-movie stars. As usual, MacDonald deftly mixes musical styles from blues to Celtic folk and sings his ample melodies in a smooth, crooning tenor sometimes reminiscent of Don McLean. On And Then He Woke Up, MacDonald has mellowed without losing his edge. ~ William Ruhlmann
The new album, Rod's first new release since 1994, features some of Rod's best songs, from the social commentary of "Who Built the Bomb (That Blew Oklahoma City Down)?" to the shadowy "Me and Uncle Joe" to the whimsical "Happy All the Time."One of the leaders of the folk revival of the '80s, Rod MacDonald has been a major force among singer/songwriters since being one of the primary organizers of the Greenwich Village scene (Rod founded the Greenwich Village Folk Festival in 1987). Two critically-acclaimed releases in the 1980s ("No Commercial Traffic" and "White Buffalo") led to continuous touring. In the 1990s, Rod released "Highway to Nowhere" and "The Man on the Ledge".

And Then He Woke Up songs
$11.69 The marketing department at Warner Brothers must have really wanted to get a jump on the holiday season when they released Faith Hill's 2008 Christmas album, JOY TO THE WORLD, in September. Hill's set of carols and traditional songs may not suit the late summer, but that doesn't make JOY TO THE WORLD any less of a treat. As albums like BREATHE and FIREFLIES proved, Hill has no problem crossing over to mainstream audiences, and this Christmas set (the singer's first) should strengthen that appeal. If the song selection itself isn't surprising--including the usual ...
| | Hank Williams Revealed: The Unreleased Recordings CDs (2009) DGBK
And Then He Woke Up album
$30.54 1951 was a breakthrough year for Hank Williams. He had a string of moderate country hits already under his belt, but the release that year of his version of an old jazz age novelty tune called "Lovesick Blues" suddenly made him a big star. It also meant his touring schedule increased, but he still found time that year to slip into Nashville and prerecord shows for the Mother's Best Flour Company. These good-natured and intimate performances were cut to acetate discs and then played over the air on Nashville's WSM radio station. Brittle, disposable, and made for only a few plays, these acetates were then shelved and forgotten until they were literally rescued from the trash in the '70s by an alert WSM employee. In all, 72 of these shows survived, containing some 143 songs, and this three-disc set is the second installment in Time Life's CD preservation ...

$9.79 A member of Jim Cullum's band since 1979 and the main arranger for the Riverwalk, Live From the Landing radio series, pianist John Sheridan has spent most of his career exploring pre-bop styles. A big fan of the swing era, when Sheridan was given the opportunity to lead this date for Arbors, he quickly put together a list of favorite songs that included both a few standards and many obscurities. It turned out that all but three of the numbers were either composed by Harry Warren or Richard Whiting. The three remaining songs ...
