| | Julian Dawson Spark CD Julian Dawson Discography of CDs
What do Richard Thompson, Steve Forbert, the Roches, and Lucinda Williams know that most Americans don't? They know about the brilliant singer/songwriter Julian Dawson, who has released numerous albums in Europe while experiencing an unfortunate lack of distribution in the U.S. Not only do they know about him, but they think enough of him to have been guest artists on those obscure European albums. Spark is a superb compilation that brings together 14 of his best songs, including "How Can I Sleep Without You" (an acoustic-based duet with Lucinda Williams), the rocking "Fragile as China" (which features E Street Band bassist Garry Tallent) and "Two Shots of Jealousy" (with Richard Thompson), and the whimsical "I Like Your Absence" (with the equally whimsical Roches on backing vocals). The songs and performances are of consistently top quality, muscular and solid and bright and poppy by turns. Dawson sings in an unaffected baritone voice that cuts through the mix but never draws attention to itself. ~ Rick Anderson

Dirty Linen (8-9/99, p.68) - "For those who might have missed the often acerbic, sometimes rocking, and always intelligent music of veteran...Julian Dawson...[SPARK] offers a good chance to catch up. [His] perspective on life often combines a jaundiced eye with a pop-rocker's heart..." Julian Dawson Spark Songs | 1. | I Like Your Absence |

Spark
$11.95 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Can't Let Go" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Williams's fans waited a long six years for this album, as Lucinda went through music business hassles and a revolving door of producers. The reward for their patience is an album full of rootsy, heartfelt observations that alternately rock and mourn. CAR WHEELS is full of songs about loss and longing, like "Metal Firecracker," ...
| | Allman Brothers Band Dreams CDs (1989) Box Set
Spark
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks ...
| | Poco Forgotten Trail (1969-74) CDs (1990)
Spark
$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the classic anthem "Pickin' Up the Pieces," which kicks things off, through "You Better Think ...

| | No Direction Home Soundtrack - Bootleg Series 7 No Direction Home: The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 CDs (2005)
Spark
$15.99 The soundtrack to Martin Scorcese's two-part PBS documentary on Bob Dylan, NO DIRECTION HOME is a two-disc affair consisting almost entirely of previously unreleased material. One couldn't start any further towards the beginning of Dylan's career than this collection's first track, "When I Got Troubles," a modest, folkish tune caught on tape by a high school friend and presumed to be the first original Dylan song ever recorded. From there, we follow the breakneck trajectory of Dylan's early career, as he develops at an unprecedented rate, from young Woody Guthrie ...
| | Iris Dement Infamous Angel CD (1992)
Spark
$10.65 To many fans, Iris DeMent's debut INFAMOUS ANGEL remains the best work of her career. Unlike her later records, which sometimes get mired in political dogmatism and bleak melancholy, INFAMOUS ANGEL is the work of a wide-eyed innocent extolling the simple virtues of love, faith, and home.
From the whimsical spiritualism of "Let the Mystery Be" to the brisk love song "Hotter Than Mojave in my Heart" through to the album's closing affirmation of faith (the traditional gospel classic "Higher Ground"), INFAMOUS ANGEL evokes a world full of promise and possibility. Best of all are "Our Town," a loving tribute to a dying small town, and "Mama's Opry," a stunningly effective reminiscence of childhood ...
| | New York Dolls Seven Day Weekend CD (1973)
Spark
$10.59 This was recorded live in the studio, in the wake of the release of the Dolls' Todd Rundgren-produced eponymous debut album, not with an eye for release but more likely for radio broadcast. In any event, it's been bootlegged, at varying lengths, for years now, although this seems to be the complete set, and the sound here is actually quite good. Basically, this finds the Dolls at the top ...
