| | Ignoble Vermine: A Tribute To Ptose CD (2005) Import
Emotional Bends album
$18.59 An obscure alternative pop group that released three LPs in the mid-'80s, Ptôse was France's answer to the Residents (with a unique yet resolutely French electro-pop touch, in the spirit of Plastic Bertrand and Ludwig von 88). About to reissue the group's catalog on CD, Musea's avant-garde subsidiary Gazul released Ignoble Vermine, a very entertaining tribute album bringing together a host of artists who are seriously not taking themselves too seriously. Ranging from ironic '80s pop to mechanical instrumentation, from dark avant rock to impossibly cheerful demento pop, the contributions show how pernicious Ptôse's influence was on the French underground. The lineup will be familiar to the label's followers and includes Klimperei, Toupidek Limonade, Dragibus, Palo Alto, Pierre Bastien, and a handful of surprises, including Beta-Lactam Ring recording artist La Société des Timides à la Parade des Oiseaux and the off-kilter techno duo Les Hauts de Plafonds. Ptôse's catalog being slightly thin, some favorite songs appear ...

| | Killick Erik Hinds A.S.A.P. Wings CD (2007)
Emotional Bends music CDs
$10.15 A.S.A.P. Wings is the first album from the trio of Killick Erik Hinds, Dennis Palmer and Bob Stagner, A.K.A. The Shaking Ray Levis. The music is a juggernaut, a whale of a hoot. Post-post-modern revivalism at its ornery and most unabashed best. And there's Red Rider, a Residents cover, to boot! Open up yr wind-ers, open up yr doors...The Shaking Ray Levis is an ongoing collaboration of musicians with a common interest in improvisation. The project was conceived and led by the Chattanooga-based team of Dennis J. Palmer and Bob Stagner. The latest incarnation of the group is a trio with Killick Erik Hinds of Athens, Georgia. They use storytelling, synthesizers, samplers, percussion, and Killick’s one-of-a-kind H’arpeggione to achieve their distinctive sound. They are the first American group to have recorded for Incus Records, the record label of late British free improvisational guitarist Derek Bailey. Additionally, they have performed and recorded with John Zorn, David Greenberger, Fred Frith, Min Tanaka, Amy Denio, Ken Vandermark, Peter Kowald, Susan Alcorn, Larry Ochs, Habib Koité, Chris Cutler, Susie Allen, and Derek Bailey, as well as with many other critically acclaimed artists. The Shaking Ray Levis have performed internationally on the BBC, at Quebec's International Festival de Musique Actuelle, Newfoundland's Sound Symposium, London's Company Week, and Denver's ReThink Conference. Dennis Palmer has the distinction of being invited to play at Company Week in 1988 and the final one in 1994. Furthermore, their educational outreach program has been presented in many public schools and malls throughout the U.S. The group has been awarded grants by the British Arts Council, Meet the Composer, and several regional organizations. Incus released the Duo's first and second CD's, False Prophets or Dang Good Guessers in 1993 and Short in the U.K. in 1997 with ...

| | Preservation Hall Jazz Band Made In New Orleans CDs (2008) Box Set
Emotional Bends album
$55.89 When it comes to keeping the flame of traditional New Orleans jazz, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band is a city (and state) institution. Founded in the 1960s, the PHJB is a flexible combination of surviving old-time practitioners and younger players faithful to the sounds of King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, and the other lesser-known giants of N'awlins jazz. MADE IN NEW ORLEANS is a limited edition, decades-spanning box set including a CD, DVD, seven-inch vinyl record, and photographs. The highlights range from the Creole tune "Eh Lah Bah," sung by local trad jazz legends Billie and De De Pierce, to a jolly cover of the 1971 Kinks song "Complicated Life" to the excellent concert footage on the DVD. MADE is a virtual treasure trove for serious devotees of both the PHJB and New Orleans culture.
One of the last living links to the original New Orleans jazz sound, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band is an institution both in New Orleans and throughout America. They perform in the classic Orleans collective improvisation style, which highlights a lively, interactive band sound over individual soloing. The two-disc HURRICANE presents the band performing, in ragged-but-right fashion, such chestnuts as "Sugar Blues" and "Blow Wind Blow." The second disc contains archival footage from 1960s American and German television.
In January 2006 Benjamin Jaffe drove to what was left of Seasaint Recording Studios in New Orleans to see what damage the flood waters that followed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina some four months earlier had wrought on the facility, hoping more than anything to salvage whatever master tapes he could. Amazingly, although most of the studio's tape vault was destroyed, he found the masters for the sessions his father, Allan Jaffe, had produced in the 1970s with the classic lineup of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band still intact a mere inches above the waterline. Refurbished, those tapes form the emotional core of this remarkable box set, which bridges the past with the present and essentially tells the story of the Preservation ...
