Eddi Reader & The Patron Saints Of Imperfection: Eddi Reader (vocals, concertina); Neil MacColl (guitar, mandolin, autoharp, piano, background vocals); Dominic Millar (guitar); Phil Steriopulos (acoustic bass); Roy Dodds (drums, percussion).
Eddi Reader's debut solo album following her split from Fairground Attraction found her pointedly backed by "the Patron Saints of Imperfection," inevitably interpreted as a comment on Fairground's U.K. number one hit, "Perfect." As if trying to distance herself as much as possible from the group's neo-skiffle pop sound, Reader adopted an atmospheric folk style somewhat akin to Enya, but not as produced or accessible, and covered such folk standards as John Prine's "Hello in There," Fred Neil's "Dolphins," and Loudon Wainwright III's "The Swimming Song." On such originals as "That's Fair" (another veiled reference to the old group?), she seems bitter. The result sounds more like the kind of quirky, side-project solo album that group members make than like the kind of bold solo statement expected from an emerging star. Reader remained an evocative singer, but the album flopped at home and RCA declined to release it in the U.S. [Originally released in the U.K. in 1992, Mirmama was released in the U.S. in 1997 with two bonus tracks.] ~ William Ruhlmann

This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) ...

| | Souther-Hillman-Furay Band Trouble In Paradise CD (1975) Souther Hillman Furay Band
Mirmama songs
$9.69 With producer Tom Dowd, known for his work at Atlantic Records, at the helm, the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band seemed to be distancing itself a bit from its country-rock roots with its second release, the appropriately titled Trouble in Paradise. Here the band expands on the funkier aspects of its debut album, while at the same time slipping even closer to the middle of the road. On that record it was former Poco frontman Richie Furay who was responsible for the highlights, but this time out it's J.D. Souther, who penned four of the LP's nine tracks, ...
