The Fertile Crescent's self-titled album is an unlikely release for both Knitting Factory and the indie scene in general -- the band's jazzy and funky virtuoso leanings call up images of aging music geeks who grew up on overblown prog rock. Despite the polish and overly careful construction, however, the band explores some extremely elegant pop territory. Tracks like "My Green Heart" actually recall XTC in their less stylized moments, and to criticize the band for sounding too traditionally oriented (something which has more to do with image than quality) would probably just be indie pretension. No matter how unfashionable it might seem, The Fertile Crescent is an extremely well-crafted release, and it's quite likely to appeal to fans of late-period XTC, World Party, or to the adherents of any number of bands whose dedication to pop sophistication sometimes overshadows their hipness. ~ Nitsuh Abebe

As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). Hamilton\'s premier roots and blues band TRICKBAG has just released their third CD titled TRICKNOLOGY. The songs are a reflection of TRICKBAG\'S various roots - Chicago Blues, New Orleans R&B, Tex-Mex, and Memphis String Band Tradition, all in a melting pot called TRICKNOLOGY.
