| | Blue Dog What Is Anything CD Blue Dog Discography of CDs
What, indeed? One of the Knitting Factory's less successful exercises in musical genre-refraction, Blue Dog juxtaposes noise, metal, tango, jazz and what-not in a forced, post-modern admixture that never stays in one place long enough to make a coherent statement of virtually any kind. Composer Mitch Dobday has some excellent ideas, if only he'd commit to one or two for more than a few seconds at a time. The strained irony of the band's approach is just a little more than one can bear (the use of consecutive quotes from "The Girl from Ipanema" and "I Shot the Sheriff" is embarrassingly heavy-handed). There's some potential here; whether or not it's ever realized is up to the musicians involved. ~ Chris Kelsey

What Is Anything album
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ...

What Is Anything album
$15.09 On FIRST LOVE, contemporary jazz saxophonist and composer Everette Harp moves deeper into the space he addressed on 2007's excellent MY INSPIRATION. Produced by George Duke, the meld of acoustic and electric instruments here is perfectly balanced. Melodic and harmonic structures are much more complex and don't always fit the C-jazz cookie-cutter mold. Check his original "The Council of Nicea," one of the most satisfying things here. Harp's tenor is accompanied by James Genus' acoustic bass, and some spot-on ...

| | Dmx And Then There Was X... CD (1999)
What Is Anything music CDs
$11.99 AND THEN THERE WAS X was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album and "Party Up" was nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance.
No other rapper exerts quite as much energy as Def Jam heavyweight DMX. With his adrenaline-pumped hip-hop anthems, Yonkers native DMX has taken the hip-hop industry by storm. His third album, AND THEN THERE WAS X came only one year after his highly-anticipated second album, FLESH OF MY FLESH..., which came only six months after his multi-platinum debut, IT'S DARK AND HELL IS HOT. With this series of rapid-fire releases, DMX was able to remain on the cutting edge of rap.
"What's My Name?" perhaps most clearly demonstrates the power of the Ruff Ryder frontman. The other Swizz Beatz-produced tracks bring forth more of the same flavor. His rough-edged lyrics and spitfire delivery will leave his "dogs" foaming at the mouth for more. Though X is backed by one of hip-hop's most prominent crews (the Ruff Ryders), the platinum pit bull proves ...

| | Pamela Rose Just For A Thrill CD (2006)
What Is Anything CD music
$9.85 Pamela Rose has a strong and versatile voice that is heard at its best on slower material when she expresses beauty through long notes. However, she also swings well at medium tempos. On Just for a Thrill, a wide-ranging program conceived by Rose and guitarist Danny Caron, she is joined on various selections by two different organ groups, a pair of excellent saxophonists, and a piano trio. The music ranges from Lil Armstrong's "Just for a Thrill" and "Lover Come Back to Me" to a version of "Learning the Blues" that recalls Dinah Washington, a heartfelt "La Vie en Rose," and some saucier material. The sidemen are uniformly excellent (both Jeff Ervin and Charles McNeil have spots on different selections to take saxophone solos), the organists keep the music grooving, and Pamela Rose shows that she is comfortable in several musical genres. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
Pamela Rose is a San Francisco jazz and blues vocalist who has thrilled audiences locally and internationally with her swinging, soulful style. Rose is that rare breed of entertainer who connects solidly with her audience by always delivering a personal and unforgettable musical experience. Her rich, warm voice and easy rapport with her musicians moves jazz and blues audiences of all ages. Now Pamela Rose is coming out with her fourth CD, 'Just For a Thrill'. Produced, arranged, and written with guitarist Danny Caron (Charles Brown, Bonnie Raitt, Ruth Brown), this romantic and sultry recording will be hitting jazz radio stations across ...

What Is Anything CD music
$13.85 Holly Golightly isn't the only former Headcoatee with a solo career these days, and with her second album, Ludella Black is proving she's every bit as gifted as the best-known member of Billy Childish's Ladies' Auxiliary. From This Witness Stand features Black singing 14 songs, most written by her significant other, Mick Hampshire, and featuring the estimable backing of Hampshire's combo the Masonics, but even though she gets some valuable assistance on this set, Black is clearly the star of ...
